Capetown Noir In Doubt Durban July

3 minute read

Multiple G1 winner Capetown Noir is an unlikely starter in the Vodacom Durban July and may be sent overseas for more racing instead of being retired to stud at the end of the season.

Dean Kannemeyer, who won the July with Dynasty 11 years ago and again with Eyeofthetiger three years later, said: “There is a big question mark about the race as we are concerned about the 2200m.

“There is a possibility that Capetown Noir may not run. We will see how things go in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge at Clairwood on June 7 and I will discuss it with the owners.

“We are considering the possibility of sending him on an overseas campaign.

“He was going last year but we decided to keep him here for another season after he was narrowly beaten by Vercingetorix in the KRA Guineas and the Daily News.

“As things turned out that was pretty good form. We will make a decision after the Gold Challenge.”

It had been widely assumed that the dual classic and L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner would be retired at season’s end to cash in on his stud value after contesting the Champions Cup on July 26.

Kannemeyer added that he was quite satisfied with the four-year-old’s last start resuming third in the Drill Hall Stakes.

“It was not really his game because the 1400m at Greyville is too sharp for him but he came through it well and the Gold Challenge will be his next race,”Kannemeyer said.

In other big race developments:-

• Contador will bid to secure his second straight win in the G1 Golden Horse Sprint over 1200m at Scottsville on May 24.

The Charles Laird-trained four-year-old won the race last year in the hands of jockey Piere Strydom. More recently he finished third behind Copper Parade and Via Africa in the G1`Computaform Sprint at Turffontein.

• Via Africa has been entered for the G1 SA Fillies Sprint – a race she won last year.

• Top-class three-year-old fillies Captain Of All and Red Ray, runner-up to Via Africa in the Cape Flying Championship at Kenilworth this year, are also among the Fillies Sprint nominations. Horses their age have won this race in the last three years.

• All Is Secret, winner of the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship two years ago, could also join the line-up.

• Some of South Afrtica’s best two-year-olds have been entered for the Tsogo Sun Medallion, including SA Nursery winner and runner-up Carry On Alice and Banaadeer as well as runaway SA Fillies Nursery winner Majmu. Carry On Alice and Majmu are also entered in the Allan Robertson Championship.
