The lengthy process will then see all his horses shipped on to Newmarket in the UK for a further 30-day spell in quarantine en route to the UAE.

De Kock visited Mauritius last week to inspect his horses and reported that the 16-strong team is in good health under the care of his own staff despite restricted facilities.

“The horses are in a new quarantine area where they can only walk and trot. They can’t gallop along like they did in previous years,” De Kock said.

“On the positive side, they will be arriving in Dubai more or less a month earlier than previously, which will give us more time to get them in shape for the carnival. Up to now we’ve been pressed to push our carnival contenders to fitness, which is never ideal.”

The list of runners in quarantine in Mauritius includes former Gavin van Zyl-trained Along Came Polly, who will be moving on from the UK to Kentucky after being sold to US interests.
