Marinaresco, unlucky not to win the G1 Vodacom Durban July at his previous start, scored a popular and emotional win in the race named in honour of the popular trainer, the G1 Mike and Carol Bass Champions Cup.

Due to his health Bass is retiring and placing his stable in the hands of his daughter Candice Robinson..

His long training career has seen him prepare numerous champions such as Pocket Power, Trademark and Sun Classique.

Marinaresco started a popular favourite for the 1800m contest and showed his class to win the R1 million event by a decisive 1.25 lengths.

Outsider Judicial ran on gamely for second and just held off dual KZN Million Mile hero No Worries.

The winner is now a contender for Equus Award honours after recording his first G1 victory. He has won four of his 11 starts with his previous victories including the G3 Winter Guineas and G3 Winter Classic.

Former champion trainer Mike de Kock made it back to back wins in Sunday’s G2 eLan Gold Cup when landing the spoils with Australian-bred Enaad, a half-brother to the G1 winner and Coolmore based sire Pride Of Dubai.

Enaad has now won four of 18 outings and Sunday’s win pushed his earnings to R1 325 600. De Kock won the same race a year ago with the ill-fated Wild One.

He had to win the Gold Vase to get in the race. When he won the Vase I was a bit concerned because they don’t often do the double,” said De Kock.

“There is still more to come. I don’t think he’s reached his handicap mark as yet.”

Enaad won the recent G3 Gold Vase on Vodacom Durban July day and his win rounded off a memorable seson for his rider S’Manga Khumalo, South Africa’s champion jockey for 2015/16 but facing a charge of injudicious riding in a race in Port Elizabeth last month..

Querari Falcon and Gunner gave the Equus Award judges a double headache when rounding off the season with victories in the G1 Thekwini Stakes and G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes.

Judging for the awards took place immediately after the meeting.

Gunner sprung a 25-1 upset in the Premier’s Champion Stakes for Paul Gadsby with Brandon Lerena aboard.

In the process he gave his young sire Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire for 2015-2016, a second feature race win on the day after the stallion’s son Hack Green won the G2 Umkhomazi Stakes.

Gunner made it win number two from five outings, having previously finished third in the G2 Golden Horseshoe.
