Table Bay Heads Selangor Cup Entries At Kenilworth

3 minute read

Impressive Cape Classic winner Table Bay heads the 20 nominations for the Selangor Cup and could line-up at Kenilworth to give Joey Ramsden an outstanding chance of winning the mile test for the fifth time in six years.

“It probably fits in with his planned program of the Guineas and Derby to go for the Selangor although it is not imperative that he has to run.

“We will make a call nearer the time,” said Derek Brugman, racing manager for Table Bay’s owners Mayfair Speculators.

The Table Bay decision will be important for Mike de Kock as he has three of the next four highest-rated entries in the Selangor Cup.

The Vaughan Marshall-trained Gold Medallion winner Always In Charge heads the 28 nominations for the R2.5 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes on the same card.

• Dean Kannemeyer will decide whether City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint winner Real Princess reappears under top weight in the Laisserfaire Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday.

He said: “Real Princess enjoyed herself in Durban where she proved herself against the colts.

“I gave her a break afterwards but now I want to get her going for the season.

“She is going to go for the fillies sprint races as well as the Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes in January.”

William Longsword is to be aimed at the Cape Guineas on December 17 and the CTS $500 000 mile race on Sun Met day after chalking up his third consecutive win with a most impressive performance at Kenilworth last Saturday.

Marshall said: “We have always had a high opinion of him and I was very impressed with this win -it wasn’t the strongest field but it was the way he did it.”

• Australian-bred New Predator stole the show in Saturday’s R1 million Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein.

New Predator was one of four winners on the card for former champion jockey Gavin Lerena, who also captured the R2.5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup aboard Chili Con Carne.

New Predator was always travelling well in Saturday’s G2 contest and ran on smartly to hold off a late challenge from last season’s G1 Vodacom Durban July fifth place finisher Saratoga Dancer.

New Predator, winner of last season’s G2 Drill Hall Stakes, is a son of Epsom Derby winner New Approach out of the winning Fastnet Rock mare Head Over Heels whose four winning siblings include Australian stakes winner Presently.

• Trainer Johan Janse Van Vuuren dominated Saturday’s Turffontein meeting with four graded stakes winmers.

They included the blue blooded She’s A Giver who impressed with a stylish 3.75 length win in the G3 HSH Princess Charlene Of Monaco Starling Stakes.

Lightly raced, the Avontuur Estate bred filly was making her first racetrack appearance since breaking her maiden over 1200m at Greyville in June.

She is the first South African graded winner for the hugely promising young sire Philanthropist (Kris S) after she was bought for R550 000 from the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Van Vuuren’s dominance continued when he sent out the impressive Doosra to land the first feature win of his career in the G3 Graham Beck Stakes.

The blue blooded colt’s dam won the G1 SA Fillies Classic and he made it two wins from just three outings when holding off a late challenge from Mike de Kock’s previously unbeaten Australian bred runner Heavenly Blue.
