Frankie Dettori Wins Cape Derby

3 minute read

History was made at Kenilworth on January 28 when legendary jockey Frankie Dettori won the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby aboard Edict Of Nantes.

It was a first Cape victory for Dettori, whose numerous previous big race wins had included the English equivalents aboard Authorized (2007) and Golden Horn (2015).

The Derby win was all the more fitting by the fact that Investec’s Bernard Kantor had been instrumental in bringing Dettori to South Africa for the Sun Met meeting.

Edict Of Nantes, who had put up a less than stellar gallop prior to Saturday’s big race, was handier than usual in the R1 million classic as Zodiac Ruler set a sedate early pace, ahead of the quietly fancied Elevated.

Hot favourite Horizon raced back in fourth with Edict Of Nantes among the front bunch.

Edict Of Nantes hit the front with 400m to go but the favourite Horizon quickly laid down what appeared a formidable challenge.

However, Dettori knew what he had under him, and Edict Of Nantes kicked again to score by 1.75 lengths, with a game front running Zodiac Ruler fighting back for second.

Captain Gambler, the only filly in the race, ran a blinder back in third, ahead of Newlands and a bitterly disappointing Horizon, who may now be gelded.

Edict Of Nantes was winning for the fourth time from just ten outings. He was another big race win on the day for trainer Brett Crawford, who had earlier in the day claimed the R1 million Kuda Sprint with Bold Respect.

Crawford said: “Having a rider like Frankie Dettori makes all the difference. I did not have to give him any instructions, and I thought gave him a world class ride.”

Edict Of Nantes is the fifth G1 winner sired by former Gr1 Gran Criterium winner Count Dubois.

• Champion trainer Sean Tarry was expected to dominate Saturday’s G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship and he duly did sending out Carry On Alice and Trip To Heaven to fill the first two placings.

Carry On Alice looked an absolute picture and justified the choice of jockey S’Manga Khumalo who elected to ride ahead of Trip To Heaven.

She was always handy in the 1000m race while her stable mate Trip To Heaven was once again slow at start.

Jo’s Bond flashed her customary early speed and was among the leaders of the inside group while Captain Alfredo spearheaded the charge down the outside.

With 500m left Carry On Alice started to move up menacingly down the centre while Jo’s Bond, who accounted for Carry On Alice when the pair met in the recent G2 CTS Southern Cross Stakes, was digging in.

Trip To Heaven, may well go down an unlucky loser, as the brilliant five-year-old, suffering the first defeat of the season, ran on strongly with Red Ray to narrowly go down to Carry On Alice.

Red Ray ran a great race over a trip short of his best while Jo’s Bond put up another game effort to claim the fourth spot.

Carry On Alice was claiming the fourth Grade One triumph of her career. The daughter of red hot sire Captain Al stopped the clock in a time of 58.22 as she posted the ninth win of her career and pushed her earnings to over R3.9 million.

In lifting the spoils Carry On Alice made amends for her narrow defeat in last year’s race, when she was narrowly beaten into third by Gulf Storm.

Saturday’s success meant that the Klawervlei Stud bred mare has now won G1 races at two, three, four and five, making her one of the real stars of the South African turf
