Preview and form for Turffontein

3 minute read

Preview and form for the meeting at Turffontein on Saturday. Selections David Thiselton

Race 1

Preview: GIRL WITH AMBITION is by Silvano out of a 94 merit rated Giant’s Causeway mare who won six times from 1400-1800m. She does not have to be a champion to win this race where she jumps from pole position with Gavin Lerena up. PRINCESS AURORA has been knocking on the door and having found little extra over 1400m in her last two she will likely appreciate the step down in trip. She has a good draw of two with Strydom up. SIMPLY ROYAL is by Silvano out of an Al Mufti three time-winning miler who has produced two multiple winners by Jet Master and Western Winter respectively. A wide draw is against her on her debut here. MIZSHOWBIZ, a full sister to the five-time winning sprinter Cinema Scope, made a fair debut last July and this is her first run since. COUNTESS JEMIMA has had 17 starts already but is consistent and has a chance of earning a 15th cheque. (David Thiselton 8-2-11-9-3)

Race 2

Preview: BRAZUCA has three Gr 1 runner up finishes to his name and is being tried in first-time blinkers here. POLYPHONIC, a progressive sort, is the best in at the weights on official merit ratings and will have come on from her last start over the too sharp 1450m. ARCTICA’s best form to date has been over 1400m, but he is effective over this trip and has the ability to make a trifecta position here. (David Thiselton 2-5-1)

Race 3

Preview: GEOSPHERE comes from a yard renowned for their expertise with stayers. She was staying on well over 2000m last time and should relish both this trip and the good pace which it is likely to be run at. BUBBA’S DOLL finished a fair second from the front last time over this trip in a workrider’s maiden. She had first-time blinkers on and was 0,75 lengths clear of the fast finishing Geosphere. Being by Silvano she can continue to progress. JUST A JET was most disappointing last time over 2450m, but was slow away and then rushed before being caught wide of the leader without cover. That was also in yielding going and she was found to not be striding out, so from a good draw and with a good pace on she can bounce back. In her penultimate start she beat Little Tokoyo by six lengths over 2450m. EVERSILVER is a handy to front-running sort who has been thereabouts in races between 1800-2000m in her last three. Being by Ideal World she should still be improving, although she will need to race more conservatively than last time to see out this step up in trip. LITTLE TOKOYO was able to dictate at a crawl last time and then stayed on in the sprint for home to be narrowly beaten and was nine lengths clear of Just A Jet. She now has Strydom up but will not be able to dictate this time as there should be a good pace with both Eversilver and Bubba’s Doll in the field. (David Thiselton 1-3-4-2-6)

Race 4

Preview: CHEAT THE CHEATERS has run well in all three starts and produced a strong finish when stepped up to this trip last time. The formlines point to her as the winner on paper, although the draw of eight makes it tricky. RIGHTS OF MAN has run two fine races over 1600m and wasn’t far behind classy respective winners on either occasion. He has drawn wide but the blinkers are off and Gavin Lerena is up over a step up in trip he should appreciate. ARISTOCRAT has run two fair races over this trip and could make it into a trifecta spot. (David Thiselton 2-1-3-6-4)

Race 5

Preview: STREET GAZE, who is by Street Cry out of a Gr 1-winning Cape Cross mare who won from 1200m up to 2020m, was backed on debut over 1200m and was not far back. She was doing her best work late and this will be much more to her liking on pedigree too. Lerena is up from a plum draw. CRUSH looks to have scope and should relish this step up in trip. She has a fair draw of five in the nine horse field. LEGEND SEEKER has run some good races over this trip and now has a tongue tie on so is the dark horse. ROSE OF SOWETO went close in her first attempt at this trip last time when running on well. ADVANCE TO GO moved up well last time over this trip and was beaten less than a length by Rose Of Soweto. GREAT SOUND improved last time with blinkers, going close over 1400m and could earn from a good draw. KANTARA QUEEN stayed on for third behind a runaway winner last time and can’t be ignored. (David Thiselton 9-8-3-1-5-4)

Race 6

Preview: GRAND ROCHE won her maiden impressively over 1200m and should appreciate the step up in trip. She doesn’t have an easy task first time out the maidens off a merit rating of 82 in a fair field, but is likely to be out to prove herself a classic contender. TEENAGE DREAM enjoyed the step up to this trip last time and just failed. She can go close from pole position, despite having been given a four point raise. The consistent SPAN DIE SEILE was running on well over course and distance last time and Strydom now rides. (David Thiselton 4-8-5-7-9)

Race 7

Preview: SILVER STRIPE is 4kg under sufferance on official merit ratings with the best in Patchit Up Baby, but being a four-year-old by Silvano she will be coming into her own now and looks to have the credentials to cause an upset. In her penultimate start she cruised in over 2450m to win easing up by nearly five lengths. In her next start she was caught wide the whole way, so the run can be ignored. She now has the ideal pole position draw for her style as she will be able to get cover before turning it on on the straight. Raymond Danielson looks to be an ideal jockey for her too as he has fine hands and balance and good tactical nous. Last year’s runner up PATCHIT UP BABY is in consistent form and is distance suited. She is the best in at the weights on official merit ratings and Lerena rides from a good draw. She settles well, usually at the back, and should find her usual resolute finish although she would ideally prefer to run on the long-straighted Standside track. CIDADA is coming on the right way and beat Silver Stripe last time, although the latter had excuses. She is drawn well over a suitable trip, but is 4kg under sufferance on official merit ratings. TIGER FLAME, who is 3kg under sufferance with Patchit Up Baby, has won twice over this trip before. She is third best in at the weights and can earn. INANINSTANT is second best in at the weights, being officially only 1,5kg out with Patchit Up Baby, but has become disappointing and will have to bounce back. (David Thiselton 5-1-7-4-3)

Race 8

Preview: PAGODA has performed well in stronger fields in his last three starts. He should handle the step up in trip with the blinkers off and Lerena up from pole position. SKYNIGHT ran well with first time blinkers on over 1700m and with a more patient ride over this more suitable trip he has a chance. He has made breathing noises before so the tongue tie is on again. The consistent cheque earner ROYAL HONOUR drops down in trip but did win a maiden over 1600m less than a year ago so is an interesting contender over this 2000m trip. (David Thiselton 4-6-2-1-7)

Race 9

Preview: URBAN MYTH looks to have ability and this long striding galloper should enjoy the step up in trip on pedigree. A lot will depend on how much pace is on and whether he settles as he was quite strong in the running when going close over 1600m last time. The pace could come from King Of Cloth or Tern Unstoned. ILITSHE is in good form and should enjoy this trip. PATRIC should be coming into his own being by Silvano and should also stay the trip. VICTORIOUS ROYAL has dropped to a competitive merit rating and this is a suitable trip. AMERICAN TIGER produced a charging finish last time but has a wide draw although Lerena is up which will help him overcome it. PRIVATE SWAROVSKI didn’t beat much last time in his maiden win but looks to be on the up and has a chance. (David Thiselton 2-1-6-10-4-3)
