Preview and form for Turffontein

3 minute read

Preview and form for the meeting at Turffontein on Sunday. Selections by David Thiselton.

Race 1

Preview: ORPHEUS is an impressive specimen who won well on debut and could follow up. MUJALLAD finished fourth in a strong field at Scottsville last time over 1100m and has the form to go close. FLYING FREE was beaten 5,1 lengths by Mujallad on debut over 1000m but has improved and won well in his third start so has a chance. (David Thiselton 3-2-1-4-7)

Race 2

Preview: STAR PROFILE ran a decent race in the SA Fillies Nursery and was staying on so should relish the step up in trip. SILVER THURSDAY was never travelling well in the SA Fillies Nursery but before that beat Star Profile over 1200m when receiving 3g and from a good draw she should do well over a step up in trip she should appreciate. FOLK DANCE won in good style over 1200m around the turn at this course on debut and the form has worked out well so she has a chance over a step up in trip she will appreciate, although she has a tricky draw to overcome. (David Thiselton 6-5-1-2-3)

Race 3

Preview: VARIMAX has a tricky draw in just his second start but he did well around the turn on debut over 1450m and showed some pace so might enjoy the step down in trip. DUFFIELD is by Var and is a full brother to Twitter who won the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb. KNYSNA JET faced a fair sort last time without being disgraced and could earn here. PHILLYDELPHIA has run a couple of fair races and from pole position over this suitable trip has a chance in this uninspiring field. SO LONG SPRING has shown signs of ability and has a good draw over a step down in trip which might suit. SAILOR MAN improved last time and could earn. (David Thiselton 9-7-4-10-8-3)

Race 4

Preview: SERENE COUNTESS finished strongly over 1200m on debut and steps up in trip for a champion yard who are in top form. SAVETHEBESTFORLAST is well drawn over an ideal trip and over a suitable trip has a chance in an uninspiring field. JEWEL IN MY CROWN has run two good races over 1600 metres since a tongue tie has been fitted and now tries a touch further in an uninspiring field. (David Thiselton 7-1-3-8-2)

Race 5

Preview: SUCCESSFILLY ran a good race to win her maiden over this trip in her penultimate and wasn’t disgraced against a quick horse last time, so has a chance from a good draw. PIED PIPERESS has been knocking on the door so has a chance with Khumalo up, provided she takes her place as she was due to run last Thursday. WINTER WATCH looks a decent sort but won’t have it easy as a two-year-old carrying top weight against older horses from a wide draw. (David Thiselton 2-7-1-3-4)

Race 6

Preview: SHE’S A GIVER is well weighted over an ideal trip here and is the one to beat. The progressive SHUKAMISA ran a cracker over the sort of trip last time on the Standside track against a classy filly and has a good draw. DAFFIQ has caught the eye before and this is a suitable trip but he is returning from a layoff and has a tough draw. (David Thiselton 5-1-6-3-4)

Race 7

Preview: BONNIE PRINCE has good form over 1450 metres on this course and on pedigree should enjoy the step up in trip from a plum draw. CASHIN is ideally distance suited and is drawn in pole so could follow up on his last win where he beat Unagi by two lengths on 1,5kg better terms. t could last win UNAGI has gone for home too soon in both of his last two starts and with more conservative tactics from a wide draw could have a chance. (David Thiselton 6-2-1-8-10)

Race 8

Preview: Pole position-drawn MILITARY AWARD has caught the eye before and has beaten Pilou before at level weights over 1700m. Well-drawn PILOU looks to have improved and could easily reverse the form despite having to give Military Award 0,5kg. SEVENTH OF JUNE goes for a hattrick but the first two mentioned will be tough nuts to crack giving them 1kg and 0,5kg respectively from a tricky draw. (David Thiselton 3-2-1-6-13)
