No firm targets for Classic winning Mawj

3 minute read

The 1000 Guineas winner Mawj has not been given any firm targets for the remainder of the season, with trainer Saeed bin Suroor preferring to let the filly return to work before making any plans.

Even after an exciting Royal Ascot meeting, the titanic battle between Mawj and Tahiyra on the Rowley Mile rates as one of the best races of the season. Although the Godolphin-owned Mawj came out on top, Dermot Weld's Tahiyra has since stamped her authority on the division, winning the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes at the Royal meeting.

"It was a shame Mawj could not run, but we are not going to force her to run when she is not well," said bin Saeed Bin Suroor.

"She will take a break now and have some time to recover. She has a bad infection in her chest and once she is ready, we will start her work again. Once she starts her work, then we will have a look at the options.

"We will have a race for her before she leaves for Dubai [at the end of the season]. Once she starts work, then we will find a race for her. It could be in the UK or abroad."

Mawj appeared to relish the testing conditions at Newmarket on Guineas weekend, and with that performance in mind, the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes over the same course and distance in October could be an option.
