Neothlithic In The Frame For Pegasus World Cup

3 minute read

Impressive 3YO Neolithic stakes his claim for a start in the inaugural Pegasus World Cup when he romped to dominating nine lengths win in an allowance event at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday

After setting fast early fractions the Todd Pletcher-trained colt completed the 1/16th mile trip in 1:41.58, just off the track record of 1:40.97.

Neolithic broke his maiden at Gulfstream last December but was then sidelined for eight months.

Hee was coming off a runner-up effort in the G3 Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct on November 12.

“He has always been a very good horse for us,” said Jack Wolf for owners Starlight Racing.

“We had to stop on him because he had some issues. He’s always wanted two turns and Todd never gave up on thinking the horse is a good horse.”

Wolf said the allowance win had probably earned Neolithic a shot at superstars California Chrome and Arrogate in the $12 million Pegasus Cup next month.

“The thing that is lacking in the Pegasus is a horse familiar with the course and this horse has obviously won twice there going two turns.

“I think that makes him appealing. We’ll keep all of our options open at this point and see how he comes out of the race.”

“He has definitely stamped himself as one of the prospects for the race, but having said that you’ve got Arrogate and California Chrome in there and there is no way you could see this horse running the kind of race that those horses have run.

“The true class of the Pegasus will obviously be those two.”
