Curlin’s $3.4 million earner Keen Ice has been retired after suffering an ankle injury.

The injury has ruled Keen Ice, owned by Kentucky’s Calumet Farm and Donegal Racing, out of his planed final career start in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on November 4.

He will be retired to Calumet Farm to take up stud duties in 2018.

Keen Ice raced 24 times for three wins, four seconds and five thirds with 21 of his starts in Graded or Group races.

Keen Ice was placed in the G1 Belmont Stakes and G1 Haskell Invitational behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah as a 3YO in 2015 but turned the tables when they met in the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

Last year he was transferred from trainer Dale Romans to the Todd Pletcher stable and went to finish third in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

This year he won the G2 Suburban Stakes and was placed in the G1 Whitney Stakes and G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.
