More upsets in the French Guineas

3 minute read

Possibly helped by the ferocious electrical storm that hit Longchamp with rain and hail.

That was after the fillies race and before the colts race, but the upsets had already started in the Pouliches when Francis Graffard's Rouhiya won at 31/1.  She was followed by Brit raider Kathmandu 45/1 and Vespertilio 17/1.  The pay outs on the multiples were suitably astronomical.  No excuses for the beaten brigade and it will be interesting to see who amongst them will go to the Diane (Oaks).

The Poulains was delayed because of the storm and it must have affected the going which was already soft.  Metropolitan 24/1 coped with it best to give a nice win to Chantilly-based  Favourite trainer Marco Baratti who had Alexis Pouchin in the irons.  Dancing Gemini was second on 26/1 and Alcantor third at 20/1.  For the beaten brigade the storm and the track could provide possible excuses.

The Prix St Alary provided more upsets when it was won by Birthe, 10/1 from Almara 8/1 and Survie 7/1.  Favourite Date to Dream was fourth but there were only 11 runners.

The Prix St Georges was much more to script when favourite Ponntos beat second favourite Makarova by 2 ½ lengths over the 1000m course,  Third went to Mgheer on 16/1.
