show me:

He surely is tough

A change of plans in the first few hundred metres helped the well-backed Surely Special ($7.50 – $3.50) land his second career win in the (1620m) maiden/class 1.

After being trapped wide in the early stages, Siggy Carr allowed the 6yo to roll to the front, Havlicek ($7.50)loomed into second a place 1000m from home and the pair had a stirring battle from then on with Surely Special getting the nod by 1/2 head.

"They jumped in a line and me drawing out, I just didn't feel dragging him back was going to be the right move as he can over race, I just let him keep rolling forward and to his credit he was tough, he is hard work, he's hard in the barriers, he's hard going to the barriers," Carr said.

John Blacker made it a double for the night as did Chelsea Baker when the pair landed the money with Zewinner ($9.00) with a rail-hugging ride in the (1420m) BM68.

From an inside draw, Baker had the grey on the fence in third spot and didn't go around a horse winning by a short neck from Gallant Warriors ($2.90) with Freak On A Lead ($7.50)a close third.

It was another Baker with a clever front-running ride who landed Clifton Danseur ($4.00) in the (2150m) BM70 Hcp.

Troy Baker (no relation to Chelsea) gave a polished display, allowing the 6yo to roll along in front, holding a handy lead for most of the trip before accelerating through the 800m and setting up a winning break.

"He's a big free striding horse and he just likes to roll along, he's got the job done tonight. It's want we've wanted to do previously and a few runs ago it was the first time he got out to his trip and be left alone," trainer Jessie Bazan said.

"We don't have a lot of options but he does go well at Devonport."

"The other two times I've done it (led clearly) he's hit a bit of a flat spot but tonight he gave me a kick at the top of the straight and I knew then he was going to be hard to run down," baker added.
