Travelling like a Cup contender

3 minute read

Travelling Gigolo is likely to be sent for a break after his impressive win in the BM76 (2400m) in Hobart on Sunday, where he came from the tail of the field rounding the home turn to score emphatically.

Travelling Gigolo ($2.25) has now won eight races, all on the Hobart Circuit and after a spell, he is likely to have a crack at the Hobart Cup early next year.

The 6YO was ridden by 3kg apprentice Lauryn Bingley who said she learnt a lot from her ride on the gelding two weeks ago.

"He was up and about and a lot more switched on today. Last start, I got to the front too early, and he was vulnerable late.

"He does take a bit of riding, at the 600m, I had nowhere to go, so we had to bide our time, but he is a very talented horse and he was too good for them," the young jockey said.

Travelling Gigolo beat Page ($10) by a half-length with Yarra Master ($2.30) finishing third.

Keys was back in the winner's circle when stable newcomer Flying Billie quickly repaid her new owners, scoring at her second start or the stable with an all-the-way win in the 1400m Class 1.

Ridden by Hayley McCarthy, Flying Billie ($16) went straight to the front and held off the heavily backed Van Scotia ($2.90) with Pepperoni ($5) running on for third.

Exciting early win

Kakia ($11 – $5) showed he could have a promising future after winning at just his second race start in the first of the 1200m maidens, downing the fast-finishing Sienna Wolf with Rare Oro ($101) third.

After drawing wide and finishing down the track in his first race, Kakia began well, raced outside the leader and sprinted clear to win impressively.

"A fantastic result; when he entered the stable he didn't know much at all but over the past six weeks he started to pick it all up; he's a horse with a bit of a future I think," Neil Walsh from the Jessie Bazan stable said.

"He's a full brother to Muscle Up. He's a lovely type of horse, he was missing the 'kick' in the trials and then jumped slow at his first start, but we knew if he jumped well today, he could get up outside the leader and had the ability to get the job done."

Sienna Wolf ($3.60), having her first Hobart run, didn't seem to handle the uphill run to turn, but once she balanced up, she finished powerfully and looked one to follow.

Dancing her way to victory

After an impressive fast finishing second at her most recent start, April's Dance ran right up to that form with an impressive maiden win.

Ridden by the state's leading jockey Anthony Darmanin, April's Dance ($5.50) tended to overrace in the early stages but 'Darma' allowed the 3YO to stride to the front approaching the turn, and she quickly put the result beyond doubt.

"Every start, she is just improving that little bit more, she's three nearly four now, and it's just taken a little bit of time to get it together but I'm really proud of her, she's just on the improve every start," an excited trainer Rhonda Hall said.

Placegetters Rippen Gold ($11) and Puzzle Miss ($19) both finished well and should be winning in the near future.

Race winning move

A daring ride by comeback jockey Kasi Boxall landed the money in the Maiden/Class 1 (1600m) with Waddy Waddy lasting to score by a nose over Es And Es.

With a muddling pace mid-race, Boxall allowed Waddy Waddy ($41) to slide around the field from last and challenge for the lead, dashing to the front around the home turn.

Waddy Waddy, who is now in the care of veteran trainer Walter McShane, has won two of his past four starts.

"The pace was very slow, and thank goodness she (Kasi) recognised that and didn't leave it too late to take off," McShane said.

"He's very well bred and has shown us plenty of ability in the past. We had a bit of a problem after his last win; it took us a while to get him right after that, and today he was back to his best."

Es And Es ($3.30) has now been placed in his past two runs and is close to a win, while Wickham Light ($2.30) came from near last at the 400m to finish a close third.
