ARMIDALE: Faverock Hopes To Break Par

3 minute read

Tamworth hobby trainer Nick Green hopes consistent Faverock can finally breakthrough for a well-deserved win at Armidale tomorrow (Saturday).

A game of golf involving Green’s father Geoff and Faverock’s owner, Brisbane-based Shaun Scott, led to the former doughnut shop owner training the five-year-old by Falvelon. In six runs for Green Faverock has missed a cheque only once.

The gelding, to be ridden by 4kg-claiming apprentice Vad Bolozhinskyi, tackles the New England Mutual Benchmark 55 Handicap (1100m).

“The owner Shaun Scott brought out the syndicate that raced Faverock and after playing golf with my father (Geoff) he rang me and asked if I wanted to train the horse,” Green said. “He was a headache at first trying to get the best out of him but he’s only missed a cheque once and been competitive from 1000 to 1400-metres. I’m hoping he can finally win one tomorrow.”

Green, who recently sold his doughnut business, has just two horses in work with Tears Go By, a former Greg Eurell-trained gelding, also representing his new stable first-up tomorrow. Green describes Faverock as a “lovely type".

“He can be pretty headstrong but he’s a good eater and good worker. A good type for this area. I’ve only got two horses but with my partner Sally I hope to focus more on the horse side now I’ve sold my business.”

Faverock has won three from 29 starts with nine placings. The gelding is coming off a last start close third to Buckle Me Up over 1400m at Coonabarabran on August 3. He turned in a similar effort behind Chiliad over 1200m at Moree his previous outing on July 23.

“The form around him has been very good,” Green added. “He gets in real good at the weights (53kg) after Vad’s claim.

“He’s had nearly a month between runs and freshened up nicely. He looks fantastic. My only concern is coming back to the 1100-metres. He’ll go forward and play catch-me-if-you-can tactics.”
