Spinning Jenny Group 1 Bound

3 minute read

A tilt at Group 1 success now beckons Spinning Jenny after she held her rivals at bay in the Listed Strutt Stakes at Hobart on Friday.

The Group 1 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville or the Group 1 AJC Oaks loom as autumn goals for the Brendan McShane-trained filly following her winning effort in Friday’s Listed Strutt Stakes (2100m) at Hobart.

“This has been the start of her long term plan,” McShane said.

“Her next venture will be interstate in an Oaks race.

“That is why we took her to Melbourne in October, we wanted to teach her how to travel.

“She will go to South Australia or Sydney depending on what the best lead up races are for her through Victoria.”

Spinning Jenny was sound the start prior in the 1000 Guineas at Launceston running fifth behind rivals she faces again on Friday such as Iggimacool and At The Weekend.

Promising apprentice Bulent Muhcu picked up the ride and from the early stages made his intentions clear in moving the filly forward to sit outside leader Poussin.

The daughter of Hard Spun travelled nicely around the home turn and had strode to the front a furlong out.

She then proceeded to hold off late challenges from the more fancied duo of Iggimacool and Geegees Velvet.

Race favourite At The Weekend was caught wide with no cover throughout and while looming briefly in the straight, weakened over the closing stages.

Friday’s Listed Strutt Stakes continues a career best season for Bulent Muhcu with the success his first black type result.

The Turkish apprentice also won the Devonport Cup earlier in the summer aboard Double Eagle.

Muhcu has now partnered the filly in three of her four career wins.

“From day one she has always had that nice temperament,” Muhcu said.

The Stephen Theodore-trained Road Trippin’ took out the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m).

Local gallopers Jakcorijim and Rebel Bride filled second and third respectively.

Dual Thomas Lyons Stakes winner Youthful Jack was scratched from the event after the veteran galloper trod on a nail.
