The combined patience of the Hawkes stable and owner Alan Bell paid off at Canterbury on Wednesday when Binary made a successful racing debut.

The stable had sent Binary out for three trials between July and November before he finally went to the races where he did not disappoint under James McDonald.

“He is a really nice horse going forward and we have taken our time with him. Alan Bell has been a good client of ours of late and he lets us do what we want to do,” said Michael Hawkes.

“It was a nice starting point today. The last 100 metres was his best, once he concentrated he really hit the line strongly.

“It is a lot easier this time of year, but he is going to be a really nice horse in the future.”

McDonald settled Binary third and in the straight he showed a good turn of foot to leave the rest behind and win by two lengths.

Crimson God was second with Shadow Lord third, a half-head away.

A $310,000 Karaka Premier Sale yearling, Binary is by Starcraft out of the G1 winning mare Calveen.
