Najoom Wins Gold Coast Trial

3 minute read

Exciting filly Najoom has breezed to a barrier trial win at the Gold Coast to ensure she is on track for her first Group One test on Saturday week.

Najoom was ruled out of last Saturday’s $2 million Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben after the Gai Waterhouse stable had issues with her fitness last week.

Najoom was the Stradbroke favourite but was ruled out after connections had paid a late entry fee due to lingering concern over the leg cut she suffered in her dominant win in the Fred Best Classic at Doomben on May 23.

The $500,000 Tatts Tiara (1400m) for fillies and mares at the Gold Coast on June 20 is now her target.

Waterhouse, now in the UK with her Royal Ascot runner Wandjina, will be pleased to hear that Najoom had little trouble winning today’s trial.

Tommy Berry made a special trip from Sydney to ride the filly in the trial, where she wore blinkers and settled at the rear before she worked home easily for a soft win.

Meanwhile the Rob Smerdon stable will continue to monitor Lumosty before deciding is she starts in the Tatt's Tiara.

Lumosty disappointed as favourite in the Stradbroke after she was pushed wide.

Stradbroke winner Srikandi has been confirmed for the Tatts Tiara, adding to a high class field that will also include Catkins, Hazard, Solicit, Bring Me The Maid, Peace Force and Peron.

Srikandi’s trainer Ciaron Maher said the Tatts Tiara was too good an opportunity to pass up with his in-form mare, especially as it is being run at the Gold Coast where she is unbeaten in two starts.

“Back to fillies and mares on the Gold Coast where she really likes to race seems ideal,” Maher said.

“She won the Juanmo Stakes there last year and the Victory Stakes last month so she seems to really enjoy racing there.”

Srikandi took her record to eight wins and two placings from 12 career starts and prizemoney of $1,847,600 with her Stradbroke win.
