The talented sprinter is a hot favourite to defend his title in the Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes, run over 1400 metres at standard weight for age.

Watermans Bay is at $1.65 in TAB fixed odds betting, with Magnifisio at $4 and Battle Hero at $8.50 the only other runners in single figures.

Watermans Bay has been runner up at both of his runs this campaign, narrowly defeated by Rock Magic in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes before running on strongly to get within a length of Buffering in the Winterbottom last Saturday.

It was Watermans Bay’s third successive Winterbottom placing, having run second to race rival Magnifisio last year and third to Buffering in 2013.

Watermans Bay went on to turn the tables on Magnifisio in the Scahill last year.

Watermans Bay’s last win was also at 1400 metres when taking out the Group 3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield in April.

Short-priced favourite Watermans Bay put up a very smart performance in winning this race for the second year in succession. He settled well in last place in the seven-horse field and remained there until nearing the home turn. William Pike took him deep on straightening and he produced a tremendous late final sprint to grab a decisive win in the closing stages. Quality mare Magnifisio had a good trip in fourth place, one out and one back. She moved up well rounding the home turn, got to the front at the 200m but could not hold off the winner’s late challenge to finish second, in a repeat result of this race in 2014. Respondent was fifth on the rails, eased into clear running on turning for home and kept battling on well for a good third.
