A cool ride by leading country jockey Mathew Cahill aboard Canberra-trained mare Just A Blur gave him his second Wagga Town Plate on Thursday.

Just A Blur came from near last to sweep home and grab the $100,000 race by a half neck from the Paul Murray-trained Sure And Fast to give the Barbara Joseph and Paul Jones table their second win on the first day of the Wagga carnival.

It was Cahill’s second Town Plate win after his 2006 win with Little Shrek and also ended a 25-year drought for Barbara Joseph as she trained the 1991 winner Merimbula Bay.

The Town Plate victory took Just A Blur’s career earnings past $370,000.

“It’s just wonderful, in this industry you don’t grow old, you just keep waiting for the next good horse to come along,” Joseph said.

“This one cost us $20,000. She’s a great horse, I absolutely love her.

“I spend every day with her and you just get to know that she’s something special.”

Just A Blur may now back up at next week’s Scone Cup carnival before heading to Brisbane and Cahill hopes he keeps the ride.

“We had a good run, there was speed in the race and the race panned out just how it had to for her,” Cahill said.

“It was a strong field but she had the momentum up, had a good clear run from the top of the straight and I always thought she would get there.”

“I’ve had as bit of luck on the mare before. It’s a great thrill to win for Barbara and Paul.”

Cahill hopes to land the Wagga Gold Cup on Friday with the locally trained High Opinion.
