Paul Murray trained in partnership with jhuis father until Bede Murray poassed away in March at the age of 80.

Paulk is now running the big Murray stable at Kembla Grange and Conjola on the NSW south coast and has taken a team of more than 10 horses to this week’s Wagga carnival.

The carnival was always a priority for Bede Murray and Paul upheld the family tradition whenh he trained a winner, two close seconds and a third on the first day of the carnival on Thursday with the promise of more to come on Friday.

For the third time in four years, the Murray stable won the feature 2YO race of the carnival and also finished second in the first day highlight, the $100,000 Wagga Town Plate, with Sure And Fast.

Murray won the 2YO event with Black Opal Stakes placegetter Flash Fibian, more than doubling his earnings by landing a $50,000 bonus for his connections. He also trained the third placegetter Can’t Find Snippy.

Claimed by Bede Murray in 2013 with Chosen Song and 2014 with Sure And Fast, Paul celebrated with his mother Edie in attendance.

“We set a big team for the carnival and Dad would be proud,” said Paul Murray.

“I think we have some very good chances on the second day as well.”

“Flash Fibian was going to the paddock after he ran second in the Black Opal but we kept him in work to aim him at the Wagga bonus race and spaced his runs.

"He’ll go for a spell now before we can look forward to next season and getting him out to 1400m or further.”

Flash Fibian has a strong Wagga connections as local stud master Stuart Lamont purchased his dam in-utero in 2013 and she foaled him down at his Kooringal Stud that year.

Lamont sold the colt to Bede Murray as a yearling for $34,000 but then bought back a share in the youngster and races him with a group of Riverina-based owners who were also involved in the ownership of Sure And Fast and Chosen Song.
