Snowdens Keen To End Melbourne Drought

3 minute read

Randwick trainers Peter and Paul Snowden hope to end a frustrating losing sequence in Melbourne when they send two last start winners to Flemington on Saturday.

Snowden Racing has not had a Melbourne winner since the spring. The father and son training partnership has had 17 starters in Melbourne since Serene Majesty won the G3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield on October 10.

The Snowdens have trained two winners and seven placegetters in Melbourne this season from 21 starters.

To their credit 17 of their runners have contested black type races and they include six placings in Group and Listed races. Their black type placings included four at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week since their last win in October.

However they shouldn’t be too depressed as the overall results for Snowden racing this season have been spectacular, winning 130 races including 17 Group and Listed events plus 181 placegetters from 685 starters.

With more than 100 horse in work at Randwick at any given time the stable runners have accumulated almost $11 million prizemoney, the Golden Slipper and Magic Millions Classic winner Capitalist ($3.508 million) clearly being the biggest contributor.

The Snowden acceptors at Flemington on Saturday are the three-year-olds Hand From Above and We’re Sure.

Hand From Above, a last start winner over 1600m at Warwick Farm, is an acceptor for the Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) while We're Sure is down to run in the Listed A.R. Creswick Series Final (1200m).

We’re Sure resumed from a spell with a win over 1300m on the Beaumont track at Newcastle on June 18.

Goulburn trainer Danny Williams has also been attracted by the big prizemoney on finals day at Flemington.

He has Vee Eight, the winner of his last two starts on country tracks in southern NSW, in Listed Taj Rossi Series Final (1600m).
