Moruya Showcase Meeting Attracts Sydney Jockeys

An impressive list of leading jockeys are set to ride at Moruya’s first Showcase meeting next Monday featuring the $40,000 Moruya Cup.

Following the successful Narooma Cup meeting on January 2 Moruya Jockey Club is preparing to host its richest ever race meeting next Monday with $270,000 prizemoney on offer and up to $108,000 in BOBS Bonuses.

As a Showcase meeting four restricted races will be worth a minimum of $30,000, the Moruya Town Plate (1200m) and Stayers Showcase (2000m) will each be worth $35,000 while the North Ryde RSL Club Moruya Cup (1660m) and Showcase Country Maiden (1200m) top the program at $40,000 each.

With the prizemoney set to attract quality fields Moruya Jockey Club has added to the profile of the meeting by inviting a number of Sydney jockeys to ride at the meeting including Josh Parr, Jay Ford, Grant Buckley and Jeff Penza.

They will be joined by leading country-based jockeys including Mathew Cahill, Richard Bensley, Brendan Ward, Brodie Loy and Michael Travers.

Moruya Golf Club has joined with Moruya Jockey Club to stage two big days of racing entertainment.

A racing golf day open to all will be held at Mortuya Golf Club on Sunday followed by a BBQ and Moruya Cup Calcutta.

Events on Moruya Cup day will include a Punters Club and a rich Fashions on the Field competition where a lady will be selected to to represent Moruya Jockey Club in the SERA Fashions on the Field contest to be judged on the Goulburn Country Championships day in February.

Former Moruya trainer Luke Pepper, now based in Canberra, will be aiming to add to his big record in feature races at Moruya with his last start Narooma Cup winner Marquee.

Marquee gave Pepper his third Narooma Cup win since 2011 and will now attempt to be the trainer’s third Moruya Cup winner.

Marquee will attempt to emulate Ilringya, who landed the Narooma Cup/Moruya Cup double for Pepper in 2011.

Pepper won the same double in 2012 with Quichang (Narooma Cup) and Ilringya (Moruya Cup).
