After a dominant performance here and now likely favourite for the Sydney Cup (Gr.1, 3200m) Big Duke was given a lovely start by Craig Williams, settling the gelding fourth next to the fence with a circuit to run. Down the back, they maintained their position although the lead changed and the pace quickened. Passing the 1200m Williams let the favourite stride a shade closer, still saving ground then shook the reins at the 600m to go forward and pressure the leader. Turning in, they grabbed the lead but Williams did not asked the question until the 200m and they bounded clear to win handily under hands and heels. Aloft was second at the 1400m and near the last corner was pushed three wide by the winner turning in and tried to match the winner but was no match, staying on fairly for second from Rock On, who tracked the winner into the straight and battled on for third, the first three being well clear of a late emerging but distant Algeria.
