Redzel resumed after his Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) victory in May to record a brilliant first-up win and in fast time (56.23). He showed all his customary speed to take the early lead, got a break on turning for home and then went to the post to score impressively, dashing home his last 600m in a very quick 32.91. Spieth, also resuming, settled in last place in the small four-horse field, improved nicely from the 300m, went to second at the 200m and the battled strongly for a very good second, looking set for a good preparation. Nieta was third to the home turn, went through on the inner to second on straightening and then kept fighting on nicely for a good third in a sound first-up run. The Monstar was smartly away, raced outside the leader (Redzel) but was under pressure nearing the home turn before finishing last, but beaten just over three lengths, also going soundly considering the fast time.
