First Wave Of Imports Ready For Caulfield

3 minute read

The first wave of international raiders for the spring carnival will be unleashed at Caulfield next Saturday.

A number of the horses who landed in Melbourne last week will be released from quarantine in time to contest feature races at the Caulfield Guineas meeting.

English trainer Hugo Palmer plans to start his pair Wall Of Fire and Mask Of Time, the Aidan O’Brien camp is preparing two of the Ballydoyle team for the meeting and Jane Chapple-Hyam has a start planned for her Cox Plate hope Kaspersky.

Palmer intends starting Wall Of Fire in the G2 Herbert Power Handicap over 2400m while Mask Of Time and Kaspersky are intended runners in the G1 Toorak Handicap over 1600m.

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby also plans to roll out his first runner at this year’s carnival on Saturday with Kidmenever to run in the Herbert Power.

Appleby, who made such an impact with his runners at last year’s carnival when visiting Melbourne for the first time, plans to run Folkswood in Sunday's Cranbourne Cup and Francis Of Assisi in the Caulfield Cup while Qewy will be held back for the Geelong Cup.

Kidmenever and Folkswood galloped together at Werribee on Saturday and finished on terms.

Glyn Schofield will ride Kidmenever in the Herbert Power while Kerrin McEvoy has been booked for Folkswood in the Cranbourne Cup.

The O’Brien-trained pair Taj Mahal and Johannes Vermeer will bring international flavor to the G1 Caulfield Stakes with Damien Oliver and Katelyn Mallyon in line to ride the pair.

Taj Mahal and Johannes Vermeer worked strongly on the grass at Werribee on Sunday morning.

Australian Bloodstock have ruled out a start in the Herbert Power Handicap for their imported star Red Cardinal.

Red Cardinal will not make his Australian debut until the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 7 where he will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

Moore’s booking for Red Cardinal has left Hugh Bowman considering offers to ride the imports Marmelo or Tiberian in the Melbourne Cup.

Bowman went to the Werribee International Quarantine Centre on Saturday morning to ride Marmelo in a workout.

Michelle Payne, who trained her third winner at Murtoa on Saturday under her dual jockey/trainer licence, was to have ridden Kaspersky in a gallop at Werribee on Sunday morning but was a late scratching due to illness.
