RANDWICK February 5

Kensington/Randwick A Grass/Polytrack; Soft 5

23 Heats – Kensington 1 x 1000m (Group/Listed); 1 x 850m (Group/Listed); A Grass 1 x 1200m (Open); 8 x 1045m (2 2YO; 3 Open; 3 Maiden); 9 x 735m (6 2YO; 1 Open; 2 3YO); Polytrack 2 x 1080m ( 2 Open); 1 x 780m (3YO)

A massive set of 23 trials began with two heats for the Group and Listed horses on the Kensington track.

The race fit DISCHARGED did the job in good style in the first heat over 1000m (58.77; 33.76) but the eye catching efforts came from the talented pair REELEM IN RUBY and VICTOREM as they found the line impressively under soft rides.

The second heat over 850m saw John Thompson's highly regarded 3YO MAMARAGAN trial like the horse he promised to be last season, showing excellent speed to lead clearly and run to the line with plenty in hand in good time (50.02; 33.74). However it was the closing effort of his stablemate SWEET DEAL to finish second that really took my eye. She took plenty of ground off the winner under a big hold from Nash Rawiller, serving notice that she is in the right form to add to her excellent first-up record, especially when placed against her own sex.

Thompson's G1 winner DREAMFORCE won the 1200m open heat on the A grass (73.86; 36.11) in tradesman fashion, having too much class for much lesser performed rivals.

There were a host of good performances in the 2YO heats. Early season winner CAPTIVANT zoomed home from the rear with a fast last 600m to win his 735m heat (43.72; 33.01) and unraced fillies VESUVIO and YATSUMI, both carrying the Corumbene Stud colours but coming from different stables, really made an impression with their 1-2 finish in their heat (43.63; 33.48). The fastest 735m heat winner was the Mark Newnham-trained RUSSIAN STANDARD (43.50; 33.52), another youngster with definite debut prospects.

The last 735m heat of the day was won by the classy sprinter WILD RULER (43.98; 33.90). He had panels on his opposition but was never allowed full rein under a tight ride from James McDonald and could have posted a much quicker time.

WYONG February 4

Course Proper; Soft 6

17 Heats – 5 x 1000m (3 Open; 2 Maiden); 12 x 845m (8 2YO; 2 Open; 2 Maiden)

A strong set that featured eight trials for 2YOs, five heat wins for the Kim Waugh stable and the appearance of several high profile Group performers set for the autumn.

The results underlined just how much depth there is in the Kim Waugh stable as her runners featured prominently in the open heats while she produced a batch of unraced youngsters who really took the eye with their smart trials. Tommy Berry rode most of her runners and they will be a combination to watch in coming weeks.

The standout win in the 1000m heats was the 5.29 lengths score by the Waugh-trained HOLY REIGN (59.78; 33.86) with Berry sitting cold as he opened up a big margin on his rivals over the last 200m. Stablemate PRINCESS BETTY also performed strongly winning the fastest 1000m heat (58.82; 33.65) from an equally good stablemate JOY FOR US.

The third open heat over 1000m featured a smart win by the talented BOMBASAY (59.79; 34.38) but the standout was the strong second by Waugh's Group star TRUMBULL under a quiet ride from Berry.

Several high profile performers warmed up nicely for their coming campaigns in the open heats, most notably the imports MUGATOO, MY SWASHBUCKLER, COLLIDE and CRISTAL BREEZE.

The 2YO heats over 845m look certain to throw up some good winners. Kim Waugh is in a good place with impressive heats wins by her unraced trio THE BULLRING (51.39), TRINITY MISSILE (50.47) and CONRAD (51.24) and runner-up TURNING. Tracy Bartley also won two heats with the running types ANTARCTIC PRIDE (50.94) and SEBRENCO (49.81) and there was a double for the Waterhouse/Bott stable with QUEEN OF DUBAI (51.39) and STATE CAPITAL (51.65).

The open heats over 845m featured thee return of the talented SIR ELTON in his first trial appearance since last March. He didn't come up and had obvious issues when last in work but the signs are good that he is back on track after he worked well within himself for a soft heat win (51.23).

An unraced maiden to watch out for is the NZ-bred COOLFORME, a 3YO by Per Incanto trained by Adam Duggan. He has definite prospect gauged by his strong 845m heat win in good time (50.53).
