The Star

Barry Campbell

Several different jockeys and trainers had multiple winners on Sunday. Anthony Darmanin (4), Siggy Carr (2), Chelsea Baker (2) and Cameron Thompson (2) but I'll make Barry Campbell "The Star" for his treble from just four runners at the meeting. Freelancer has been very well placed and very well ridden by Daniel Ganderton for a hat-trick of wins this campaign. Debutante Isafjordur was well found in betting and the further the race went, the better he got, but undoubtedly the most impressive of Campbell's winners was Julius. The 5YO gelding demolished a handy BM68 field carrying 60kg and connections can now start aiming the bar much higher. The stable and colours won the 2021 Newmarket with Deroche, could Julius make it back-to-back?

Sectional Standout

Trojan Storm – R6 BM68 (1150m)

The 8YO is very exposed by this stage of his career, we know he's a back marker with a powerful finish and that racing pattern means he'll be unlucky more often than not, which his career record of five wins and 20 minor placings shows. His last 400m and 200m Stridemaster sectionals were the fifth fastest of the day which saw him run into second behind Julius at a big price. Looking at his form, up in class and down in weight rather than down in class and up in weight might be his best chance of win number six.

What went wrong?

Strike Impact – R1 Maiden/Class 1 (1880m)

The writing was on the wall for Strike Impact before the jump (see Market movers below) and unfortunately the 4YO gelding ran right up to the betting drift. For the second consecutive start Strike Impact disappointed, and while the stewards' report from Sunday said that the horse had a poor heart rate recovery after the race, trainer David Keating also said that the horse doesn't handle the synthetic surface and will get a chance to redeem himself on the grass before his campaign comes to an end.
