Winning a major factor in Newmarket bid

3 minute read

One of Tasmania’s most promising gallopers Rebel Factor makes his return to racing in Launceston on Wednesday night in a benchmark 68 handicap over 1100 metres for what could be a lead-up to the Newmarket Handicap in a fortnight.

The Team Wells-trained gelding won at his only two starts last preparation on his home track in Devonport with his owner Chris Wickham keen to aim the lightly raced five-year-old at some feature races this time in.

"We bypassed last Sunday's Goodwood Handicap because we thought it would be better for the horse to run in an easier race first-up and then assess where we go from there," Trent Wells said.

"Obviously the Newmarket is where we would like to see him heading in a fortnight, but he has to win well on Wednesday night for us to warrant putting him in against the state's best sprinters.

"We will have a much better idea of where to head after this next run, but he is in very good order, and we are expecting him to be hard to beat."

Rebel Factor will carry top weight of 61kg with Brendon Mccoull to ride, and while it is a big weight, he has drawn ideally in barrier one and he has won over the trip in Launceston.

The Adam Trinder-trained mare Majestic Diamond, who has won her past two, looms as the main danger along with Assaranca from the Barry Campbell stable.

The Glenn Stevenson-trained Namabaale was an eye-catching second in Launceston two weeks ago in a class one over 1400m at his first start since July, so he should make his presence felt in the class one over 1400 metres (race 9).

Last start Namabaale raced outside of stablemate Piiink Beauty throughout and it was only a lack of race fitness that brought about his demise, but with that run under his belt he should be too good for his rivals on Wednesday night.
