Godolphin giant makes huge impression

James McDonald has tipped a bright future for Godolphin’s Commemorative.

Commemorative would dwarf most fully grown male thoroughbreds, but the two-year-old filly's size wasn't the only talking point following her stunning debut win at Canterbury.

The Godolphin youngster proved she had the ability to match her hulking frame with a dominant display in Wednesday's Casino Prince @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1100m), shouldering her way off the fence on the home turn and streaking clear to score by almost five lengths.

Stable representative Darren Beadman likened Commemorative's size to that of legendary former State Of Origin front rower Sam Backo as she bumped a more diminutive rival out of her way.

"On the home corner when she was able to execute in that position, it was a bit like Sam Backo and 'Alfie' Langer on his outside, but she really got into her gears lovely and extended in fine fashion," Beadman said.

"She couldn't have been any more impressive."

Commemorative boasts a beautiful pedigree being by superstar stallion I Am Invincible out of two-time winner and stakes placegetter Memorial

Her maternal grand-dam is Mnemosyne, the dominant three-year-old filly of her generation who captured three legs of the 2005 Princess Series and won the Group 1 2005 Thousand Guineas and 2006 Queen Of The Turf Stakes

"Her mum is Memorial, who was out of Mnemosyne, so she's a very well-bred filly," Beadman said.

"Her mum won her first two races as a two-year-old and she's obviously precocious enough to win at two.

"I'm sure the team and James (Cummings) will treat her with kid gloves. They've given her plenty of time to find herself and grow into herself, so springtime is going to look promising."

Winning jockey James Mcdonald was equally effusive and said Commemorative had untapped potential.

"She only worked it out the last twenty metres, but she oozes a lot of quality. She is a lovely filly," McDonald said.

"No doubt she will be in the big races."

McDonald hit the ground running at Canterbury, adding wins aboard the Chris Waller-trained Nostalgia and Flashing Steel for Annabel Neasham to land an early treble.
