Weekend wrap: Lakota Fire's dominant win, Balfour's big day

3 minute read

Former Adelaide trainer Mark Kavanagh’s decision to take a chance on European sire Sioux Nation at the 2022 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale looks a smart one after Lakota Fire’s impressive win on the Parks at Morphettville on Saturday.

Mark Kavanagh paid $210,000 for the colt who followed up a solid debut in Victoria with a dominant 3.8 length win justifying a solid push in betting.

"I took a risk on him,'' Kavanagh said.

"I've always liked him a lot, he was in a very strong race at Werribee and he's really taken that experience on board.

"We'll see where he takes us, he thriving,'' he said.

Campbell Rawiller's success in South Australia continued winning aboard the Ryan Balfour-trained Deevine, the second leg of a training double for Balfour after Picargo scored earlier in the day for Alana Livesey, her 64th win across SA for the 2022-23 season where she sits fourth on the Jockey Premiership.

Rawiller had to weave a passage to get clear running in the home straight before the six-year-old extended his solid first-up record.

"It was a great ride,'' Balfour said of Rawiller ability to find clear air from a tricky spot on the turn.

"It was a very good training effort to come here first-up and put them away like that, he was really tough to the line,'' Rawiller added.

Former local apprentice Lachlan Overall also enjoyed a successful return to Adelaide to land his first Morphettville winner aboard the Patrick Payne-trained Alhambra Lad made it four wins in succession.

"He's been going super, Patrick's got him flying,'' Overall said.

It was the first leg of a double for Payne after The Guava claimed victory later in the day on protest after he found trouble in the home straight.

SUNDAY saw David Halliday claim a training double at Port Augusta, and history made for the Atkinson family. Unicorny put in a dominant performance to score by four lengths, and in turn saw father-daughter combination Robbie and Felicity Atkinson claim their first winner together.
