Ladbrokes Blog: 2024 Sunshine Coast Cup Day Preview

3 minute read

The Sunshine Coast Turf Club takes centre stage in Queensland this Saturday with a ten-race metropolitan program that is highlighted by the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup.

It's a race that co-trainers Steve O'Dea and Matt Hoysted have dominated in recent times but amazingly the duo don't have a runner this year.

We've analysed each race and provided our top selections below.

RACE 1 - 1:13PM: QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1600 METRES)

Ringer's Reward (2) is on the quick back-up after chasing home the undefeated Fortuneer last start over 1300m at Eagle Farm.

The Kevin Kemp-trained filly did well to run on for a length second with a further five lengths back to third.

The way she ran through the line suggests the rise to a mile will suit perfectly.

That was her fourth placing in a row and she looks well positioned to breakthrough for a deserving win.

2 Units – Ringer's Reward (2)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 1

RACE 2 - 1:48PM: QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap (1000 METRES)

Lead Me On (1) did plenty wrong but was still too good when winning the Magic Millions The Debut at the Gold Coast last start.

He showed good speed before proving too strong in the run home over 1000m despite wanting to run about.

The Chris Anderson-trained Brutal gelding had looked good winning a trial prior to his debut.

He'll be better for the experience and should be hard to run down.

1 Unit – Lead Me On (1)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 2

RACE 3 - 2:23PM: Class 3 Plate (1000 METRES)

Party Spirit (7) has been racing in a rich vein of form this preparation with three wins from four starts.

The Rob Heathcote-trained four-year-old mare won her first three starts this time in, including two strong wins over this course and distance.

Last start she did well to finish third by 1.3 lengths in the Magic Millions Country Cup after suffering from heat stress.

She's well placed under the set weight conditions of the race and should enjoy a nice run on speed for Ben Thompson.

1 Unit – Party Spirit (7)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 3

RACE 4 - 2:58PM: BENCHMARK 78 Handicap (1600 METRES)

Solar Apex (1) was very good when resuming at Doomben over 1350m last start.

The Jack Bruce-trained son of Deep Impact ran on well but just ran into one better and had to settle for a neck second.

He'll strip fitter second-up and will enjoy the rise to a mile given four of his five wins have come over the journey.

Cejay Graham's claim helps and he gets his chance against this field.

1 Unit – Solar Apex (1)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 4

RACE 5 - 3:33PM: QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1000 METRES)

Bossed Up (2) bombed the start in the Magic Millions The Syndicate last start and it was good night nurse for his chances.

We can put a line through that run as the Tony Gollan-trained gelding was much better in his two starts prior to that.

The son of Better Than Ready won over this course and distance first-up before bolting in by three lengths over this trip at Eagle Farm.

There looks to be good speed in the race which should see Jimmy Orman settle just off them before coming with a strong finish.

2 Units – Bossed Up (2)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 5

RACE 6 - 4:12PM: OPEN Handicap (1000 METRES)

Golden Boom (5) returned in great order in the Magic Millions The Syndicate last start.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding settled handy and fought bravely but fitness gave out late to finish third by 2.9 lengths.

He'll have come on nicely since that hit out and he is undefeated in two second-up races.

He loves this course and distance and should prove hard to run down with Ben Thompson in the saddle.

2 Units – Golden Boom (5)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 6

RACE 7 - 4:52PM: BENCHMARK 85 Handicap (1800 METRES)

Tony Be (6) comes north after two solid runs to start this preparation.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding worked home well first-up over the unsuitable 1400m at Eagle Farm before getting to the line fairly when jumping to 1800m last start at Rosehill.

He'll strip fitter third-up and won the last time he contested a race in Queensland of this distance which was just three starts ago.

Jimmy Orman has been booked to ride and should give his mount an economical run from the inside barrier.

1 Unit – Tony Be (6)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 7

RACE 8 - 5:32PM: LISTED SUNSHINE COAST CUP (1400 METRES)

Kinloch (3) returned in impressive fashion when winning over 1200m at Randwick last start.

The son of I Am Invincible settled last after drawing the outside gate before showing a devastating turn of foot to charge past the field and win by a nose.

He'll have come on since that run and will appreciate the rise in distance.

He raced in great order when in Queensland last preparation and looks well placed to add black-type to his resume.

1 Unit – Kinloch (3)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 8

RACE 9 - 6:10PM: Class 6 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Hatchet (1) has plenty of weight to carry but looks a great winning chance after two excellent runs to start this campaign.

The Rob Heathcote-trained gelding kicked things off this preparation in great style with a strong win over 1200m at Doomben.

Last start he got too far back in the Magic Millions QTIS race before finishing off strongly for sixth.

He'll strip fitter third-up and the likely strong speed will aid his chances.

1 Unit – Hatchet (1)

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 9

RACE 10 - 6:50PM: BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1400 METRES)

Charlie's Case (12) is up in class but is racing in the best form of his career.

The Jack Duncan-trained gelding ran on well to finish 1.3 lengths third over 1350m at Doomben first-up.

He then stormed home along the fence over this course and distance to win with something in hand.

He'll have come on since that run and responds well for Mark Du Plessis who is again the pilot.

1 Unit Each Way – Charlie's Case

BET NOW: Sunshine Coast Race 10
