Staking Strategy: Devonport - Sunday, 5th May 2024

Sunday thoroughbred racing is on the synthetic in Devonport, and seven races are programmed.

The first of the day is at 12:50.

R1 Ladbrokes Odds Surge Maiden, 1150m

Siena Wolf (11) disappointed as a short favourite last start and never really looked likely. She's since been freshened, trialled well, and has the blinkers going on for her first start on the home track. Lightmeupjazz (9) is another likely improver at Devonport with the shades on. Newitt had success for the stable at the last meeting. Gie It Laldy (7) was an eye-catching run over 1009m here last start and is suited up to 1150m off the back of that. So I'm Dreaming (8) had strong market support in that race and could improve with a debut run under the belt, where she settled a long way back. Stablemate Delamere (5) was also backed at odds on debut, where she weakened after racing on a hot speed. Tigers On Top (12) has her first start on the synthetic and has been solid in all four career starts on the grass.

R2 Goodstone Group Maiden/class 1, 1650m

Pinandi (13) raced last Sunday over 1200m, making good ground out wide in a race run to suit those on speed. She's sharply up in trip, but fitness is rarely a concern with runners from this stable. Mystic Hope (6) was a surprise winner two starts back, before struggling to find clear racing room last start. Liandra Gray-trained pair A Little Deceit (1) and Mr Rouquin (5) are well-placed, dropping back in grade from what they contested last start. Havlicek (3) raced on the pace over a mile in Launceston, giving a good kick to just miss. He draws wide but I'd expect him to roll forward again. Flight Ready (2) has placed in 0-60 company at his last two which is good form for this, but was unplaced at his only previous mile run.

R3 Kevin Sharkie Class 1 Handicap, 1009m

Thoros Of Myr (1) was an enigma as a 2YO. He was consistently short in betting but only returned one win and some heavy beaten margins. He's had a couple of handy trials and maps for a good run tracking the likely speed in Stars In The Night (9) and Bluff Point (2). The latter was a dominant winner at her first Tassie start, and that form can be pushed in the opening race. Leanne Gaffney trains four in the race, with Trixie (5) and Muisca (6), previous T&D winners. Positive Press (7) was unplaced at her only Devonport start but has a racing pattern that should be suited to the short course. Hypercube (3) returns off a freshen with Newitt on. She's no star, but the stable always warrants respect. Stablemate Lika Mosh (8) is ready to win a race, but I'd prefer her up in distance, not dropping back.

R4 Tasmanian Horse Transport Bm60 Handicap, 1150m

Belpine Miss (5) defied the pattern for winners of the night last time in Launceston, circling the field from the back. Mandate (9) and Bao Bun (13) rounded out the placings in that race, but I'm not sure any of the three draw to advantage here. Leanne Gaffney again has a big team in this race, all resuming. Cornelian Bay (1) has a great fresh record along with three wins from four starts at the T&D. Vokes (7) trialled stylishly but is a decent chance to be posted from a wide draw. Gunship (4) was a different horse in Devonport, winning in soft fashion. He'll need another gun ride from barrier 16. Chicane (6) has rarely put in a bad one since arriving in the state, but mostly over longer distances. The likes of Exalted Crown (8), Gee Gee Can Win (2), Power Magnum (12), Shim (14) and Sunshine Moshe (10) don't win out of turn but wouldn't shock in a very difficult start to the quaddie.

R5 Torque Gear For Guys Bm72 Handicap, 1150m

Seydoux (2) looked perfectly placed in Launceston and duly saluted at a very short quote. This appears to be another ideal race for her, well-weighted with 57kg after the claim for Lauryn Bingley. Stablemates Muscle Up (1) and Gallant Warriors (4) are back in trip after respective second placings as favourites. Both horses warrant a stack of respect, with Adam Trinder appearing to have all the aces in the race. The Spirit Of Zero (6) went as good as she could from the tail first-up in Hobart. Ring Of Honour (5) ran a nice second at his return in an easier grade and should only be suited by the extra distance of this contest.

R6 Thai Imperial Bm60 Handicap, 1350m

Bankrollbenny (2) and Born A Winner (8) finished as the exacta in a similar race to close the last Devonport card. The winner was given the run of the race, while Born A Winner sustained a wide run from back in the field. The runner-up has a 2kg swing in his favour but maps to give a start away again. Tricky Mikki (9) is racing in great form and draws for a soft run near the speed. Alpine Affair (3) bombed the start last week, ending his winning chances, but still ran well. Stablemate Southern Wind (1) was fine in an unsuitable race first-up and will be hitting the line hard if back markers can get into the race.

R7 The Stables At Spreyton Bm64 Handicap, 1650m

Kireina Marubrah (7) may enjoy a return to the tight confines of her home track after tiring towards the end of the Hobart straight last start. Three's A Crowd (5) and Weldborough (6) are back in class after acquitting themselves well in 68 company last time out. I doubt the rise to a mile is a negative for either. Lion's Tooth (4) flew under the radar in the early stages of his campaign, but the market caught up last time. He ran well there in a race dominated on the pace. Surely Special (3) was no match for Kireina Marubrah three starts ago and has been on both ends of photo finishes since then. Stablemate No Access (2) isn't proven at the mile and finished in a pack for the minors over 1400m last Sunday.
