Mount Gambier cup Preview: 22nd March 2024

3 minute read

Local galloper Clever Man will chase a third successive $70,000 Mount Gambier Gold Cup (2050m) on Friday.

The Trevor White-trained galloper won his first Mount Gambier feature as a $31 chance in 2022 with Paul Gatt in the saddle before Zoe Lloyd produced a brilliant ride on the $2.60 favourite to win last year's feature.

Clever Man holds an impressive record on his home track with five wins and three placings from his eight starts and his trainer said the horse was in perfect order.

"He's spot on,'' White said.

"He's had a bit of bad luck this prep, we've had a couple of bad rides, things haven't gone right in a couple of races but his work this morning was super and proved he's right on the job,'' he said.

White said he hopes Clever Man's love for his home track can be a factor in the feature after a luckless last start second behind fellow Cup contender Farooq.

"He loves the going here,'' White said.

"Farooq beat him at Naracoorte last start, but he probably should have won.

"He was there down the side but got carted back through the field and flew home, hopefully he can turn the tables.

"There are some handy horses from over the border, but I think with some luck he'll be right there in the finish again,'' he said.

It's a Cup with some quality among including Thrill Kill who has been runner-up in the Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln Cups at his past two starts while Herbert Power placegetter Ferago set to resume in the race for Patrick Ryan.

Fellow Victorian Khoekhoe, who finished fifth in the 2021 ATC Derby behind Explosive Jack, will be second-up for the Matt Cumani stable while the Garret Lynch-trained Shiny Rock sits at the top of the weights having won six of his past eight starts and will carry 60kg with Sairyn Fawke in the saddle.
