Mission accomplished on debut

3 minute read

A 3YO on debut showed he could have a bright future with an impressive win in the 1000m maiden in Hobart on Sunday.

Glory Mission, who was coming off a 7.5-length trial win, was always the popular pick and with a gem of a ride from Daniel Ganderton, favourite backers had few concerns.

"He did a good job. The plan was just to be three-wide outside the speed, but the way it worked out, I was able to get an opportunity to get him in and teach him something which will be of benefit moving forward," Ganderton said.

"He got in between them, pushed his way out, quickened off the mark, switched off as soon as he got his nose in front, it's done him good, so we're happy."

By Stratpshpere x Gloray, Glory Mission started $1.75. He defeated Hububbajahn ($8), who has the hoof on the till, with Love Nest ($15) running on into third place.

Provided he pulls up well, Glory Mission may have his next run in the $50,000 Tasbred 3YO (1200m) in Launceston on 5 April.

Bright future

Trainer Barry Campbell is predicting his promising 2YO Hoax will be an even better 3YO after the filly made it two wins from two starts.

After an impressive first-up win in Launceston 18 days ago, Hoax was sent out a hot favourite ($1.30) and never looked like being beaten after apprentice Chelsea Baker took her straight to the front.

"She's a lovely filly, still very green, which I think is quite exciting for Barry and his team.

"I didn't want to lead, but small fields sometimes make it difficult to go with your initial plan; she was very lost in front so I tried to keep her off the rail and hope that the horse to the inside would help her out and she just kicked away and won quite brilliantly," Baker said.

"We will keep her up and give her another run. She will be a better horse at three and get a bit of a trip, too, I think. She's got a nice future," Campbell added.
