3 minute read

The Group Three WA Oaks will headline an exciting nine race program at Ascot this Saturday.

A field of ten fillies will line up to contest the staying feature which carries a total prize pool of $300k.

Own The Queen will look to make it five straight victories but has the outside draw to overcome and the return of William Pike aboard Miss Skyhigh, sees her loom as a major threat.

Of course, they're not the only two with claims, as several others have caught the eye in the lead up events so it's set to be a thrilling race.

The rail will be out 5m for the entire circuit and the track is currently rated a good 4.

Our Ladbrokes preview can be found below.

RACE 1 - 2:19PM: PETERS INVESTMENTS PLATE 2YO (1200 METRES)

At Your Service has performed well in both raceday appearances.

The Yes Yes Yes filly didn't have much luck on debut over 1200m here.

Slightly slow away, she settled in the second half of the field and was then held up in the early part of the straight but hit the line strongly once clear.

Last start, back to 1100m she was always wide but again worked home well behind a couple of very smart youngsters.

Back up to 1200m will suit and with any luck from the tricky draw she should prove hard to beat.

Clint Johnson-Porter has partnered her in both outings and he stays in the saddle for Luke Fernie.

RACE 2 - 3:04PM: TABtouch – WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP NMW (1000 METRES)

Ultimate Command has been terrific in all three starts this campaign.

The Neville Parnham trained mare was only narrowly beaten when resuming at Bunbury before leading all the way to score comfortably at her next outing.

She was just nabbed in the shadows of the post here last time and with the seven day back up, I think she's well suited dropping to the 1000m trip.

With the drop in class, she should find this easier than what she's been contesting and is set to receive every chance from barrier two under Keshaw Dhurun.

RACE 3 - 3:39PM: UNITE RECOURCING HANDICAP 3YO  (1200 METRES)

Solar System has just had the one start for the new stable and had the race won everywhere but on the line.

After taking up the lead, he travelled well and fought tenaciously in the straight but the photo finish revealed that he'd just been collared right on the post.

Formally trained at Randwick by the Waterhouse / Bott team, the Deep Field gelding will have taken plenty of fitness benefit from the outing as it was his first run in over five months.

Whilst this is a step up in class, he drops 4.5kgs and the visors go on, replacing the blinkers.

RACE 4 - 4:19PM: MRS MAC'S HANDICAP RTG72+ (1200 METRES)

Almighty Class had no luck at all when resuming here a fortnight ago.

Starting a short priced favourite, the three year old settled in the box seat off a slow getaway and had nowhere to go until the 100m mark, where he burst through but just missed.

Only lightly raced, having had the four starts, he showed plenty of talent in his second campaign, getting the better of Ripcord to salute in the Max Simmons Plate before just going down narrowly to Super Smink in the Listed Belgravia Plate.

He strips fitter for that first up run and will appreciate the rise to 1200m.

Jared Noske has been onboard for three of his four starts and he retains the ride for Mitchell Pateman.

1 unit – ALMIGHY CLASS

BET NOW: Ascot Race 4

RACE 5 - 5:00PM: SEACORP HANDICAP 1MW (1800 METRES)

Bondi's Future is racing in terrific form having won his past two starts and looks well placed to continue on his winning way.

A son of Bondi as his name suggests, he charged home to get the bob in over 1400m two runs back and last start over the mile, he hit the front 100m out and fought strongly to hold on.

Whilst he hasn't won by big margins, he's tenacious and has proven himself very versatile.

He's hard fit, I don't think he'll have any trouble running out a strong 1800m and he'll certainly appreciate the 5.5kg weight drop.

Clint Johnson-Porter knows him well and will again do the steering.

RACE 6 - 5:35PM: RELIABLE ASSET MAINTENANCE HANDICAP RTG66+ (1600 METRES)

Wubin Gold has won three of her four starts and looks highly promising.

The Shooting to Win filly was sent to the paddock after saluting at her first two outings and has returned in top order.

She was solid under the big weight when resuming and last start, when stepping out to 1400m for the first time, she powered home strongly to score comfortably.

Whilst she does rise in grade, she gets in nicely with 55kgs and looks well suited out to the mile.

RACE 7 - 6:10PM: PETALUMA HANDICAP RTG66+ (1000 METRES)

Willy Pike will make his return to metropolitan racing as he partners Shell Bell.

The striking grey filly comes off a last start victory, where she proved too strong over the 1000m on the Pinjarra Scarpside.

A winner of three from seven, the daughter of Snippetson is certainly talented but hasn't always had the best of luck.

With her confidence high she returns to town and does boast a very good record over this track and distance.

She will need a touch of luck from the wide draw but gets the right man in the saddle.

RACE 8 - 6:50PM: DRUMMOND GOLF - WA OAKS 3YO FILLIES SW GROUP 3  (2400 METRES)

Own The Queen has put together four straight victories and it's hard to see them turning the tables on her here.

Two runs back, she charged to the front 200m out in the WA Guineas and showed plenty of fight to hold out the challengers.

Last start, out to 2200m in the Natasha Stakes she made a long sustained run around them and again proved too good over the final stages.

The daughter of Awesome Rock has given every indication she'll relish the rise to 2400m and at the set weights, she gets in beautifully.

Troy Turner has an unbeaten record on the filly and I don't think the outside draw will be an issue, as she'll get back and will be powering home late.

1 unit – OWN THE QUEEN

BET NOW: Ascot Race 8

RACE 9 - 7:30PM: CTM RECRUITMENT HANDICAP 1MW (1400 METRES)

Princess In Red comes here off a determined last start victory at Belmont and looks well placed to make it two on the trot.

Only lightly raced, the Capitalist filly has performed very well in four of her five starts and didn't have the best of luck in her only other outing, which was at stakes level.

She's fit, she does rise in class but drops down in the weights and Chris Parnham stays in the saddle for Sean and Jake Casey.

1 unit – PRINCESS IN RED
