Today’s Horse Racing Tips - 17th April 2024

3 minute read

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for April 17.

Australian thoroughbred TAB meetings are today held at Canterbury, Caulfield Heath, Doomben, Balaklava, Geraldton and Launceston.

CANTERBURY: RACE 4 @ 2:35 PM

TERRESTAR (8) has been about the mark at her last couple of runs, both over 1400m at Warwick Farm. Very fit mare who looks perfectly placed out to this distance after four runs back. Has the coveted inside draw and with the limit weight she makes plenty of appeal. TAVS (6) came from last at one stage to finish fifth in a 1400m Kembla Provincial Championship qualifier last time out. Backmarker who will need a bit of luck from the inside draw but the small field suits. Sure to be charging home. HOLLYWOOD HERO (2) turned in a real eye-catcher when resuming over 1400m at Rosehill recently, coming from next to last to just miss the placings. Hard to hold out back to midweek company over the longer journey. KUREDER (3) found 1400m too sharp when resuming last start. Might need one more run but could sneak into the frame. HUESCA (4) has raced well all prep and should appreciate getting out to this trip for the first time.
SELECTIONS: Terrestar on top.

CAULFIELD HEATH: RACE 8 @ 5:05 PM

ARTZINO (8) comes here third-up and ready to peak. He improved nicely last start at Pakenham over 1600m, no match for a smart winner but holding down second. He should improve again out to 1800m now having run well over further in some good races last time in. GOTTABESAVVY (6) comes back slightly in trip from 2000m at Ballarat when beaten narrowly. He's going well and looks to get a decent run behind the speed. RASPUTINA (10) is coming off a comfortable two length win at Geelong on heavy ground. This is another test but she has to be respected off that. BAVICIA (4) was okay behind a very smart stayer at Flemington last time out and was third here prior, narrowly beaten as favourite. Rates a strong hope.
SELECTIONS: Artzino to win.

DOOMBEN: RACE 4 @ 1:08 PM

ITALIAN RIVIERA (1) was on speed winning on debut (Sunshine Coast poly) as expected. Got a long way back in an Eagle Farm Open 2 following and closed it off well. Fitter again and Rodd goes aboard. Rates the one to beat in this line-up. KENDYACATCHME (4) is an improver from the same barn. Rodd gets off but a claimer goes on. Will be improved and is a quinella hope. GE OF AQUARIUS (2) is third-up and can show more today. ZEPHYRZ ZOOM (9) showed enough placing on the poly to suggest she can get some minor money. The low gate advantages.
SELECTIONS: Backing Italian Riviera to win.

BALAKLAVA: RACE 7 @ 5:15 PM

NULLIFY (5) progressed nicely at the latest when closing off strongly into the placings at Oakbank. Carries strong form lines and is expected to take plenty of stopping third-up. FIELD THE MOMENT (1) doesn't win out of turn but rarely turns in a poor one. Wasn't far away again last start when filling the frame on the Parks track. Drops in grade and rates a winning chance. HAYAI MESU (6) wasn't far away two back and then produced another solid chase into the placings at Oakbank. Ticking along nicely and doesn't have to improve much more to be featuring. GRINZINGER BURG (3) came through a good form race at Ararat to get the verdict at Stony Creek. Confidence boosting win that puts her in good stead. In the mix.
SELECTIONS: Backing Nullify to win.

GERALDTON: RACE 4 @ 5:35 PM

GOLDEN FIGHTER (5) has been racing well at Ascot in his last 3 starts which included a win and before that, he won on this track by a short-head. He looks very well placed back on this deck with only 55.5 kilos to carry and he has also not missed a cheque in 5 runs over the trip. Hard to beat from a very good draw. DEFENDING (2) had been racing his way back to full fitness and put it all together when winning here by a nose last time out 10 days ago. He drops back 100 metres but can still have the last say. Go again. BOMBAY STYLE (1) got too far back in the running of a wide gate last start and it is an effort that is best overlooked. He can settle a lot closer to the speed early on here from a superior gate and with 7 wins already on his home track, he has to be respected. Each-way value. ARABIAN RICHES (3) is a tough local veteran who almost exclusively races on this track. He has been thereabouts lately and can never be ruled out of a first four placing. Include in all multiples.
SELECTIONS: Golden Fighter to win.

LAUNCESTON: RACE 6 @ 8:00 PM

SEYDOUX (1) runs along and missed the hat-trick by a lip in better class. The 3kg claim takes care of the weight lift and a bounce is likely. PRINCESS MATOAKA (6) went back-to-back at Hobart and has been narrowly beaten here the two since. Has been freshened and has had a sharp tick-over trial. Winning rider Newitt is reunited. A chance to go one better. GEEGEE JET BY (2) is third-up and ready to show his best. Has a 2kg claim and is in the mix. WARICA (3) is better than the most recent form suggests. Comes back from Open grade and the 3kg claim brings him into it.
SELECTIONS: Seydoux to win.
