Sydney Specials: Rosehill – September 9

3 minute read

The strength of Menari’s first up win has the colt shaping as hard to beat contesting Saturday’s Run To The Rose.

Menari was hugely impressive on resuming at this course four weeks ago, winning the Rosebud with a performance considered to be the strongest seen during the event’s eight year history.

The colt should have derived improvement from the run which is a scary thought for his opposition considering the strength of the performance Menari delivered on resuming.

After carrying a big weight on resuming under Quality conditions, Menari is now well suited under Set Weights plus Penalties on Saturday, carrying just 1kg above the minimum.

It’s also worth noting Menari meets Rosebud runner up Siege Of Quebec 5kg better at the weights for beating him last start.

He has returned in brilliant order as has the Gerald Ryan stable in season 2017/18, presently striking at 20% overall and greater than 25% at metropolitan tracks.

The son of Snitzel spearheads a strong team of runners Gerald Ryan saddles up on Saturday with other winning chances from the stable Trapeze Artist (Race 4), Deploy (Race 5) and Tango Rain (Race 8).

He also saddles up favourite The Pharoah in the final event of the day, the Tab.com.au Benchmark 84 Handicap (1400m).

The Pharoah is a tough, frontrunning type who will take catching however the James Cummings-trained Peacock profiles an each way chance to beat him.

Peacock placed behind The Pharoah on resuming at Rosehill over 1350m four weeks ago, beaten 2.8 lengths.

It was a sound performance with condition first up perhaps just giving out late over the trip.

He now meets The Pharoah 2.5kg better at the weights from when they last clashed.

While The Pharoah is now having the sixth run of his latest campaign, Peacock goes into the contest second up where he possesses a good record with one win and a placing from three starts.

Peacock’s first up outing possessed merit however still came in well below what the son of Lonhro is capable of.

He has always shown good promise and it returned him a black type win during the 2016 Melbourne Spring as a three-year-old where he claimed the Gothic Stakes (1400m).

After a just fair autumn campaign, the stable elected to geld Peacock which should help him realise his full potential as a racehorse, ideally this spring and commencing at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Run To The Rose (G2)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

Menari advanced after his impressive first-up win in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at this track on 12 August to score brilliantly here, claiming clear favouritism for Saturday week’s Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in the process. He showed good pace as he worked to overcome his outside barrier (10) before settling in second place. He got the better of the leader (Perast) at the 200m and then went to score a very strong win, and in very fast time (1:08.59). The San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Pariah had an ideal trip in third place, briefly looked dangerous when he challenged at the 200m and then fought gamely for second in a strong effort, albeit in finding the winner too good. The $101 chance Perast was quickly away and took the lead. He grabbed a good break coming to the home turn and held on very well for third in a bold effort. Kementari raced back in sixth place, one off the rails. He put in a run from the 300m got to fourth at the 200m and then kept fighting on well for (3.2 lengths) fourth in a sound first-up effort. Shogun Sun was back in last place to the home turn. He went deeper at the 300m and caught the eye in running on late for (3.4 lengths) fifth, looking suited to further.
