2024 AFL Round 8 Preview – SYDNEY v GWS

3 minute read

Racing and Sports will provide analysis of games in the 2024 AFL Season.

We'll endeavour to run through the form, incorporate appropriate stats and also supply a betting prediction which won't always just be who will win.

SYDNEY v GWS

Saturday 4 May @ SCG

Besides their three meetings in Finals (a lopsided result there to the upstart Giants), this Battle of the Bridge is the highest quality one yet.

They both have only lost once this year, have good percentages and have the best two scoring attacks in the comp.

Sydney hasn't had as many plaudits as others this year and that is likely how they'd love to be flying under the radar.

Their defence has held up superbly led by Tom McCartin especially considering Dane Rampe has missed a month. They'd have loved him this week if possible.

Then you tack on Mills and Parker having not played one second in 2024 to now and you see why there is a deserved level of confidence flowing.

But that won't mean much if GWS continue their game style. They were in a dogfight against the Lions in Canberra until half time. Then the afterburners went on.

9 goals to 2 after that saw plenty of worries for the losers. However just consider no Coniglio, Taylor and Greene were playing.

Just getting some of them back is a bonus. And they'll need it. GWS should win the ball in the middle. Will that be enough – it could well be.

Notes 3/0 to GWS in Finals
3 of the last 4 wins to Sydney

In the past Longmire would use Heeney as a midfield tag in this type of game – now he's the one to receive that. Will he still be as dominant? Callan Ward looks the man.

The prospect of a very damp SCG negates the Swans precise kicking game to some extent as well.

In what looks to be such an even game with two sides in cracking form, it's hard to fathom how there is that much between them in the betting. Expecting that to tighten.

The ins for GWS make a huge difference. GWS look a decent bet.

Match Selection: GWS by 11 points

Suggested Bets: GWS @ 2.00 @ bet365
