3 minute read

Racing and Sports will provide analysis of games in the 2024 AFL Season.

We'll endeavour to run through the form, incorporate appropriate stats and also supply a betting prediction which won't always just be who will win.

MELBOURNE v WESTERN BULLDOGS

Sunday 17 March @ MCG

The outcome of this will contain plenty of narrative and fodder for the baying press.

A win for the home side and that settles things down but they'll turn to question an under-achiever.

A loss for the home side and wow won't it be ramped up on them after the off season from hell.

In all honesty, Melbourne was hardly horrific against the Swans. Sure they didn't take full advantage of early dominance and kicking straight was an issue.

Then you had the regular focus on the entry to the forwards and what they would do with it. But circumstances must be taken into full account.

It was one of those typical dewy, ice skating rink SCG evenings. So often the ball is like a cake of soap making quality entry unobtainable. Marks on the chest become the norm as putting the dukes out leads to broken fingers.

They were still right in the game at ¾ time. Perhaps that is the most consequential part of it. That they couldn't sustain. Maybe Oliver got a bit tired after his lead up and of course Max Gawn was buried by Grundy.

Both those will be better for the run and soon Pickett will return so more options become available.

Could there be more questions hanging over the Bulldogs? So much talent, they even managed to lose to West Coast near season's end. West Coast's feeder side would have been a chance to beat them last year.

Everything about Ugle-Hagan, Naughton, Darcy, English and Lobb screams height and yet replacing Bailey Smith becomes a focal point.

Must give Melbourne another chance. They are a good side who were beaten by a good side. That hit out under their belts should only be positive.

Match Selection: Melbourne by 18 points

Suggested Bets: Melbourne 1-39 @ $2.15 @ bet365
