Racing and Sports will provide analysis of games in the 2024 AFL Season.

We'll endeavour to run through the form, incorporate appropriate stats and also supply a betting prediction which won't always just be who will win.

SYDNEY v ESSENDON

Saturday 23 March @ SCG

A clash which historically has seen an incredible amount of close games will have the Saturday night crowds pounding into the SCG.

Since 2017, they've met 11 times with 8 occasions the difference being 10 points or fewer. Ironically the one time during that period that it was a final, 10 goals separated them in the Swans favour.

They will be hoping for that again as Sydney tries to hold their excellent form to begin 2024. Beating Melbourne at home was seen as taking advantage of home ground and a side who were clearly below their best even though close.

But in defeating the Premiers on the MCG and were it not for 3 late goals, it was a comprehensive thrashing. The backline held firm led by McCartin, the forwards were diverse and the midfield tackled and ran like a swarm.

Add that to the kicking skills of Gulden, Campbell, Blakey and Warner and scything through sides will be their MO.

The Bombers will be happy to get off to a positive start. OK beating Hawthorn may not be elite form angles but they have a habit of putting in a shocker early.

That thrust off the half back line is where they will be strong much of the year. If the forwards get enough sights of that, then Stringer might be more consistent.

You can see Essendon being quite competitive here. Had the game been in Melbourne, Sydney could have had more space to show off that incisive kicking.

Another ice-skating rink could help Essendon stay closer but Grundy becomes critical with his on ground work as an extra midfielder.

Sydney's class can take them a fair way. But don't write off a close finish or even an upset. No climbing off the posts this time.

Match Selection: Sydney by 9 points

Suggested Bets: Sydney 1-39 @ $2.05 @ bet365
