St Kilda have avoided another long-term injury to a star player after key forward Max King was cleared of major damage to his knee.

Star St Kilda forward Max King has been cleared of major knee damage after pulling up sore in the Saints' one-point defeat to GWS.

King, who has endured numerous long-term injuries during his AFL career, remains a chance to take part in St Kilda's clash with the under-fire Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.

Saints coach Ross Lyon was optimistic after Saturday's match that the 23-year-old would not be sidelined long-term.

Scans on Sunday confirmed Lyon's initial diagnosis.

"Following scans this morning, Max King has been cleared of any structural damage to his knee," a Saints statement read.

"The key forward has some swelling and pain consistent with a contusion to the knee.

"We're hoping Max will train this week and put his hand up for selection for Thursday night."

Recruit Liam Henry, experienced midfielder Brad Crouch and utility Mason Wood remains on the sidelines for the 2-3 Saints.

The match at Manuka Oval in Canberra also resulted in injuries to GWS stars Sam Taylor (concussion) and Stephen Coniglio (knee).
