GWS star Tom Green appears to have avoided a serious ankle injury and could play in Saturday's AFL match against Essendon.

Green was hurt in the second term of the Giants' loss to Sydney on Saturday and it was feared he had suffered structural damage.

But scans on Sunday have cleared the midfielder of significant injury, giving him a chance to play against the Bombers in Saturday's twilight game at Marvel Stadium.

Green will still need to pass a fitness test later in the week to make the trip south.

The 23-year-old is averaging more than 30 possessions per game in his fifth season and is on track for his first All-Australian selection.

GWS are also likely to regain fellow midfielder Stephen Coniglio for the Essendon game.
