AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES, Second Frank Worrell Trophy Test, The Gabba, day one.

SCORE: West Indies 8-266 at stumps on day one.

SUMMARY: After being in grave trouble at 5-64, the West Indies recovered superbly thanks to the efforts of wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva (79) and No.5 batter Kavem Hodge (70). The pair put on 149 for the sixth wicket before offspinner Nathan Lyon had Da Silva trapped lbw in the final session. The stand lasted 311 deliveries and was the longest of the Australian Test summer by any side. Earlier, left-armer Mitchell Starc (4-68 ) captured three wickets in the first session with a fiery spell.

PLAYER OF THE MOMENT: Starc became the fifth Australian bowler to reach 350 wickets in Test cricket. His four wickets took his career tally to 352, jut three behind the great Dennis Lillee. He continued his stellar record in day-night Tests where he has now taken 65 wickets, the most of any bowler in the history of the format.

STAT OF THE DAY: The sixth-wicket stand of 149 by Hodge and Da Silva was the highest ever against Australia in a day-night Test. It surpassed the 138-run stand for the third wicket by Dawid Malan and Joe Root in Adelaide in December, 2021.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "He probably doesn't get the plaudits of some of the other fast bowlers around the world but ... he's just a genuine wicket taker Mitchell Starc." - Mark Waugh on Fox Cricket about Starc's milestone.
