Australian golfing luminary Geoff Ogilvy will be a key assistant to International captain Mike Weir when the Presidents Cup is played in Montreal in September.
Geoff Ogilvy says it's an honour to have been asked to be an assistant to captain Mike Weir in the International team's latest bid to wrest the Presidents Cup from serial winners, the USA.
Ogilvy, the 46-year-old Adelaide luminary who won the 2006 US Open while also enjoying top-10 finishes in the other majors during his distinguished career, was one of four assistants named on Monday by Canadian Weir to support him at the 15th edition of the event in Montreal this September.
"It's an honour to return as captain's assistant once again, and I can't wait to assist in delivering a successful week for the International Team," said Ogilvy, who hopes to break his duck after also being assistant in 2017, 2019 and 2022 and playing in 2007, 2009 and 2011.
The Americans have a superb 12-1-1 record in the event, having won the last nine in a row since a tie in 2003 in South Africa.
The Internationals' only win was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne, but Ogilvy wonders if Canada's former Masters champ Weir could be the man to end the drought on his home patch at Royal Montreal, the oldest course in North America, from September 26 to 29.
"Mike is the ideal leader for the team, and I am very much looking forward to working alongside him," said Ogilvy, an eight-time winner on the PGA tour.
"His passion for this event, this sport and the enthusiastic Canadian sports fans is second to none and will make for an incredible week for our players in Montreal.
"It's an honour to return as captain's assistant once again, and I can't wait to assist in delivering a successful week for the International team."
Weir, who'll be pitting his wits against US captain Jim Furyk, also announced Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman and Camilo Villegas as assistants.
"They each have their own special history with this event and today's announcement is a mere formality, as we have been working closely together through the years to ensure the International team continues its momentum from 2019 and 2022," said Weir.
"The culture and close-knit nature tied to this team is foundational to everything we will do heading into Montreal."
Four-time Major winner Els was captain in 2019 and holds the record for most matches won by an International team player with 20, while his fellow South African Immelman, the 2008 Masters champ, worked under him as an assistant five years ago.
Colombia's Villegas, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, made his debut as a captain's assistant in 2022 at Quail Hollow Club where the US won 17-and-a-half to 12-and-a-half.
