The venue for the Olympic surfing competition is struggling with poor swell after a third consecutive lay day for the WSL Championship Tour at Teahupo'o.

The Teahupo'o leg of the World Surf League's Championship Tour has been hit by a third successive lay day, with organisers hopeful of improving conditions in Tahiti.

The famed break will host the Olympic surfing event in little more than two months, but there has been minimal swell to speak of so far in the WSL's window for stop No.6 on the tour.

"The leading edge of the swell should start tomorrow afternoon, and it should fill in throughout the night," WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel said on Thursday (Friday AEST).

"We're confident that at first light on Saturday, we will have much bigger conditions than the previous days.

"We expect it to be in the six-to-eight-foot range ... we should have plenty of opportunities to run the first few rounds."

The next call will be made at 6.45am Tahiti time on Saturday (2.45am Sunday AEST).

The opening round, heat four for the women, will pit Australia's world No.3 Molly Picklum against Sawyer Lindblad of the USA and reigning Tahiti Pro champion Caroline Marks (USA).

Tyler Wright, ranked eighth in the world, is the only other Australian woman to have made the 10-surfer mid-season cut.

In the men's draw, Jack Robinson (No.2), Ethan Ewing (No.4), Liam O'Brien (No.10) and Ryan Callinan (No.18) are in the 22-strong field.
