Australian gymnast Georgia Godwin has had an original move named after her and placed in the sport's rulebook.

Olympic gymnast Georgia Godwin has become just the fifth Australian to have an original move named in her honour.

The 'Godwin' is now in the global scoring system for gymnastics.

The 26-year-old performed the move on the uneven bars at world challenge cup events in Israel and Croatia earlier this year.

As a result the 'Godwin' has now been officially recognised by the International Gymnastics Federation's code of points - the rulebook defining sport's scoring system.

Godwin was the first person in the world to create the move and then use it in competition.

"For a long time, I've wanted to have my name in the code of points, alongside four other amazing Aussie athletes," Godwin said.

"I worked hard and to be the first in the world to complete the 'Godwin' is a dream come true."

The 'Godwin' encompasses a clear hip circle, forward to handstand with 1/1 turn (360 degrees) in a handstand phase known as the Weiler kip.

She joins fellow Australians Trudy Macintosh, Jacqui Dunn, Lauren Mitchell and Mary-Ann Monckton in having an original move ratified in the code of points.

Godwin competed at the Tokyo Olympics of 2021 and is a dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist and seven-time Australian All-Around champion.
