Australians Tyler Wright and Ethan Ewing have been left to wait in their latest bid for World Surf League glory in Portugal because of inconsistent waves.

Tyler Wright and Ethan Ewing have had to endure a frustrating day in Portugal as their bid for glory in the World Surf League had to be put on hold because of weather conditions.

The two Australians were left sidelined on Wednesday after two-time world champ Wright had reached the semi-final of the women's event the previous day and Ewing made it to the last-eight of the men's competition at the Praia de Supertubos.

The action was called off for the day with inconsistent waves, in the two-to-three foot range, and unfavourable wind conditions at Supertubos.

The next call will be made on Thursday morning (6pm AEDT Thursday) after four days of competition held in a variety of conditions.

After getting underway at Supertubos, competition moved to the back-up venue of Molhe Leste on Sunday before returning to the original venue on Monday and Tuesday.

The experienced quartet left in the women's event have navigated the changing conditions perfectly, halting the progress of the younger generation of surfers in the first two events of the season.

France's Johanne Defay (FRA) is the highest ranked surfer just ahead of former Peniche winner Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), who tackles Culburra's 29-year-old Wright.
