Ajla Tomljanovic has got off to a winning start in her final pre-Wimbledon warm-up by beating Aleksandra Krunic at Eastbourne.

Australia's No.1 women's player, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist last year, won 6-0 4-6 6-3 on Monday.

That set up a second round meeting with Latvian former grand slam champion Jelena Ostapenko, the No.8 seed.

Tomljanovic is the only Australian competing at the event on England's south coast.

The 2017 Wimbledon champion, Garbine Muguruza, is also through to the second round after defeating Magdalena Frech, of Poland, 6-1 7-6 (9-7).

No.17 seed Alison Riske, of the United States, was knocked out by Magda Linette, another Pole, after a final set tiebreak.

Among the day's other winners were Donna Vekic, Kirsten Flipkens, Lesia Tsurenko and Yulia Putintseva.
