Only one Australian has survived to the quarter-final stage of the ATP's Hall of Fame Open in Rhode Island, Jordan Thompson beating Liam Broady to progress.

Jordan Thompson continues to fly the flag for Australian men's tennis, easing into the quarter-finals of the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Rhode Island, with a straight-sets victory over Britain's Liam Broady.

Both players arrived in the US off the back of a solid showing in last week's grand-slam event at Wimbledon.

Thompson had shown flashes of class on the grass in southwest London before falling to eventual finalist Novak Djokovic, while Broady made the most of his home advantage to knock out world No.4 Casper Ruud.

It was the seventh-seeded Australian who enjoyed the upper hand on Wednesday, sending down seven aces on his way to a 6-2 6-2 victory.

He now faces his doubles partner, France's Adrian Mannarino, for a place in the semi-finals, after the world No.38 knocked out Thompson's fellow countryman Rinky Hijikata 6-3 6-4.

The rivals will then have to kiss and make up, as Thompson twins with Mannarino to contest a men's doubles quarter-final against Indian pair Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth.

There was to be no repeat of Tuesday's triumph for Adelaide's world No.252 Li Tu.

Having overcome fellow Aussie Aleksandar Vukic in the round of 32 to record his first ATP-level main-draw victory, Li fought hard before losing 4-6 6-7 (5-7) to a player ranked 193 places above him in the shape of fourth seed Mackenzie McDonald.

James Duckworth took the first set against American Alex Michelsen but was unable to stay in the groove and lost 6-4 3-6 0-6.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
