Australia to meet Czech Republic in Davis Cup quarters

Leyton Hewitt's men will face the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup last eight with Canada, who beat Australia in last year's final, semi-final opposition.

Australia have drawn the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup.

Should they defeat the Czechs, who have one top-100 player, world No.30 Jiri Lehecka, they will face holders Canada or Finland in the semi-final.

Canada defeated Leyton Hewitt's men in last year's final while outsiders Finland knocked out the United States in this year's group stage.

The draw was made on Tuesday with Great Britain down to play Novak Djokovic's Serbia. In the other last eight match Italy play the Netherlands

With their backs against the wall after losing to Britain in group play, Hewitt's charges were facing possible elimination unless they defeated Switzerland 3-0 to secure their spot in the quarter-finals.

Thanasi Kokkinakis, Alex de Minaur and the doubles pairing of Max Purcell and Matt Ebden obliged with scintillating performances to spark a remarkable comeback.

The final eight nations will compete for the 2023 Davis Cup in Malaga from November 21-26. Hosts Spain were knocked out in the group stage.
